I give up

I'm living in ontario California , ya right I wish . were up here in ontario canada ! and feeling very pissed with the winters the price of things like fuel at 1.22 a liter equals times 3.8 = 1 gallon 4.63 mostly tax and at the marinas in the summer fuel price this past was 5.35 a rip .some people believe that they were born in the wrong century I believe I was born on the wrong continent .

Padraig 12-22-2017 07:24 AM

So......Move. Seriously, if you are that unhappy, move, life is too short.

I am not too far from you, Western NY, I admit I sometimes get tired of the winter but overall I love where I live. Great boating, hunting, cross country skiing etc. If we could get rid of the downstate liberals I would be even happier here.

Padraig

Here in Mn marina gas is about $1 - $1.25 higher then the local gas station. Insurance, liability, docks, maintenance, convenience, employees, ect isn't cheap. I always fill up wile on the trailer, how ever I also under stand why fuel prices are higher on the water.

steve00 12-22-2017 07:48 AM

thanks for the reply's but I guess I'm pissed hibernating here , reading about the boat run from 10th st in sarasota this week for 26 miles . and I can't even change the gear oil on my bravo 1 , drive cause its to dam cold and windy and frozen . lol

Comes down to usage more than price, if you only buy a couple hundred gallons a year then it costs you $144 bucks extra a season, $12 a month if you average it over the whole year. My mother in law rants about fuel prices yet drives about 150 miles a week in a 2.0 4 cyl that probably gets 25 mpg!

I can be fuel conscious as I buy $400-500 a month of fuel so if there is a 40 cent difference it can add up to a decent number by the end of the year. There is a "gouge station" at the end of an offramp that is literally 50-60 cents a gallon higher than the gas station I use 1 mile away. I swear people must not even look at the price! On a really busy road there is only 5 gas stations spread out over about 5 miles. Road ends at the beach on one end, ends in a swamp at the other. Real estate is pricey so there won't be any new stations built.

Nate5.0 12-22-2017 08:03 AM

Don't feel that bad......ya we get to boat all year however...

*fuel at dock is $3.50 - $4.00 right now

* We get no seasonal break in insurance even if you don't use the boat. Cost is year round no matter what

* Boat more means more sh*t to break

* Since this is OSO.....it's salt water, it might as well be toxic acid so no one wants their boat in it anyway and any boat that gets used here might as well be a paper weight or just disposed of in the trash when the owner is done.

just make sure your anodes are in great shape . I'm still envious

IGetWet 12-22-2017 08:47 AM

Sure somewhere warm year round would be nice, but absence makes the heart grow fonder. And I’d never be able to leave my boat parked outside in my driveway in Florida like I do up here.

Why is gas higher on the water?

I know a lot of people that their boats are nothing close to a paper weight, and they boat in salt water all the time. They take care of their stuff its that simple!

I thought 'I heard all kinds of celebrities saying the everything was absolutely perfect in canada???

Here, this will make you feel better......

madbouyz 12-22-2017 01:32 PM

You'll wish for the days it was 1.22 a liter if you were paying our current 2.11 (US$) a litre . (and it's been as high as $2.40)
When the cost of oil crashed 2+ years ago gov't just increased the taxes on it 'coz we're all just so used to paying more for everything anyway'

True story: My buddy buys a new Top Gun at the Lauderdale Show (250K), doesn't even have it brought home, has it sent to a paint shop for 22K in paint. Brings it back to his 1mm house on the intracoastal. He is freaking out about fuel prices, he actually has a fuel dock 500 yards from his dock. So he gets 3 50 gallon plastic barrels, loads them in his Ford Ranger and buys fuel at a land based gas station 1 mile from his house (saving $1 a gallon, roughly $150 each time he does this). Gets home and siphons fuel (200 ft of garden hose) from the plastic barrels to the boat that is on the lift!

Now while I am all for saving money, not sure riding around with 150 gallons of gas in the bed of a truck is my idea of saving anything including my life! Another mutual friend lived a couple canals down who had a 38 Powerplay and we both laughed at his fuel saving program! The guy with the Powerplay said fueling at the dock is worth the extra money as people are freaking out when they see the fuel cost on the gas pump!

Up here in Canada, Ontario specifically, the TSSA (Technical Safety Standards Association) has every location that could impact human safety, by the short and curlies. As a result, costs have skyrocketed. Cease and desist orders when storage tanks are slightly questionable, where in a automotive application all would be fine. Training costs for fuel dock attendants are in the thousands annually per person. The marina fuel market is a captive audience, so under the guise of TSSA rule, marinas jack up prices. Fuel was first to be hit...next will be slip rates, since the TSSA and the ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) is currently on an electrical mission. Couple years ago, a couple of kids fell into the water at a slip, the shore power cord got tugged in with them and they were electrocuted. No GFI circuits. Almost every marina will be rewiring the entire facility in next few years.

Dude, don’t give up on North America. Travel south a few hundred miles, Trump is doing great things here in the United States. 👍

Internet? oh so if salt is no problem you come up to the North to buy all your cars? uh huh.
Salt eats everything , mostly from the inside out , and you guys in Florida what you consider "nice well taken care of" boats we consider a 4 out of 10 up here in fresh water. :silenced:You have a different definition of nice cause everything is salt eaten turd sandwiches. salt gets into everything I don`t care how much cleaning you do and that aint no internet wives tales.

Gas here is nearly $5 a gallon so when I can scrape up some cash, I fill her up and head out. Watching the weather this morning, might get a run today. Coat everything in salt, burn some fossil fuel and pay someone to clean up the mess.

believe it or not, we have a kind of winter here too. Last couple of nights the temp has dropped to the low 70's and daytime is around mid 80's. It's a real cold snap and people are rugged up. True story, Thais are wearing big wooly jackets and shivering! Im in my usual shorts and tee shirt. :)

In comparison to the total cost of high preformance boating, the cost of fuel is minor.

Ha , We're used to you expats around here , what with your insistence on doing things like going swimming on Christmas Day etc.
In a few years your blood will thin out like the locals' and you'll think 72f is damn cold too !

That's because you have a surplus due to the fact you cant burn it in boats at this time of year :drink:

bikergja 12-23-2017 12:20 PM

Warm weather boating much better

I don't know why people go up north to buy cars when they are run in snow with all that salt and pot holes. We don't run cars in salt water. Gas at the pump today in Miami $2.31 I use rec fuel $2.69. The good about down here is boating of all types, cruising to Bahamas, fishing, restaurant hoping happens all year long. Sorry for those that don't enjoy that, not to rub it in. Everyone has choices and I for one am much happier in Florida. Everyone that's wants to we can meet up at the sandbar.
