Pat needs to talk to this business broker! This is the ad for Black Thunder. Odd he values the real estate at 5mm (incl in asking price) but the whole business is only 4.2mm? Can't believe a sharp fellow like Darr or Sunkin didn't show up looking for an 800K check to take this enterprise over!

Not much in the way for hop up parts for outboards plus most are all vanilla including the the hulls they rest on. White hull with color band on most hulls. Not all but most CC boats are built color combo that way. Super boring and outdated looking by far.

Also when the EPA mandates the Catalyst for all outboards inwhich will add 4 to 7 K higher cost to the outboard engine plus all the added systems surely will kill outboard sales. The cat is coming for outboards - its the manu s can not make the Cat last currently even to cover warranty issues.

Another issue is certain lakes and more down the road will require the higher star level rating for emissions to boat on. If I stand corrected I think --- Volvo and Ilmor current direct injections with VVT engines are the cleanest burning engines for mass production stock apps. The direct injections engines with CATS are reducing start up emissions up to 70 percent. VVT also adds to cleaner emissions. Start up emissions are a main concern especially for the next EPA emission requirements. Volvo and Ilmor will pass those emissions. Not sure about any outboards passing those emissions without cats. My guess is they won t. Just saying

Really wasn’t trying to derail the AT for sale thread, but comparing cost on a 400R to a 400hp I/O is apples and oranges. The 400R certainly costs more, but in most applications the 400R will be faster than the 400 I/O. That 400R will also have hydraulic power steering (vs. the stock I/O cable steering). Now a 250XS and an 8.1(375hp)/Bravo package (or 300XS compared to 8.1HO/425hp) have similar cost (slight advantage : outboard) and will deliver similar performance in the same hull. Longevity is a wash, ease of maintenance/rigging/installation goes to the outboard. New Merc I/Os and outboards both require a do-it-yourselfer to obtain a diagnostic tool for fault codes, so that’s a wash. Outboard parts are OEM specific, so the I/O wins on parts availability, and that’s a HUGE plus in getting back on the water quickly, but it’s the only real I/O advantage I see, and only for the do-it-yourselfer.

As for the EPA stuff, the only 2 stroke outboard I know of that will make the next level of EPA compliance is the ETEC. I have no idea on the 4 stroke outboards EPA efforts, because until they cut more weight and expense, they’re not my cup of tea.

You’re absolutely right about the outboard market being different in 10 years, and it’s exactly why I bought a brand new 2 stroke D.I. motor and maxed the warranty period to 8 years.

In between now and then, I hope someone buys AT, builds a metric crapload of outboard 29s and 33s, and a whole slew of 23’ Banshees, too; because I don’t know what the future holds, but I’d really like to own an AT some day.

So their 2016 revenue was $2.5M and they predicted $9M for 2017 and $18M for 2018? I highly doubt that. Would love to see what their actual 2017 revenue was.

No sh!t, lofty goals. Not saying it's impossible, but to quadruple your business in one year, and then double that?......

Lets just start with the 32 boats claimed to be "pre-sold".....12- 46's sold in 2017 generated 9mm (750K per boat). Anyone seen a new Black Thunder in the last 10 years? 20 boats on track for 2018 for 12MM in revenue indicates the boats are getting cheaper at 600K each

Haven't seen any of them around their own back yard, LOTO for awhile. They have not been at the boat shows, on water shows at the lake, etc for a decade. Last time I drove by the plant in Hannibal, admittedly probably a decade ago, it looked like a ghost town.

This is the equivalent of Singer trying to unload their typewriter production line to some unsuspecting boob after it was clear to the world that the production typewriter market was dead and buried by the PC. You people putting forth the notion that this a is good business opportunity are out of your freaking minds!.

I would think this would need to be bought by another boat manufacture that already has workers and the knowledge of building boats in place, And when a order comes in they can get to work on it , and at other time's they do there other manufacturing,

just my thought

Because, honestly, nobody has met my criteria. I have a list of investors willing to come on board. I don’t need investors or their money. As far as the Singer comparison I have been building outboard boats. This isn’t a new invention despite what is thought. And we have dual console models. That is the up and coming but not new either.

continue....
