Here is a Bertram pic . of the Benihana-Rocky Aoki boat.I first met him while I was a kid and later turned out in 1987 to be my Sponsor in my Pro Stock Camaro race car.

Boy, that's when race boats were larger than life. Back then a 21' Sea Ray with a 188 Merc I/O was a big fast boat. Nothing compared to the race boats.
Now race boats don't compare to some pleasure boats. Oh how times have changed. |
Re: COUPLE OF OLD O/S PIXS AND MY 2 CENTS
Originally posted by Twin O/B Sonic Found these in one of my old albums. 1974 Strohs Grand National run on Lake Erie out of the Cedar Point Amusement park in Sandusky Ohio. My parents docked a cruiser there at the time and as a 15 yr old, I got drool on a bunch of the boats:) They ran that race there I think 2 years. I remember all the pre race hype was that they would set all kind of speed records on that little ass body of water. They were misstaken:D Destroyed several boats sunk a couple as I recall from the rough water. I think the first race was running about 6 footers. But in Lake Erie they are about 10 feet apart:eek: Remember reading the reveiw in power Boat and they called it "the race on the stormy mud puddle"! (the old timers on our dock told me that would happen) High light was meeting and shaking the hand of Bob Nordskog. That was "real Off Shore"! How can they call todays races Offshore?? It should be called "Inshore". Hell, they race in rivers and bays! Half of the races I've seen on TV, the idiot announcers/commentators say their running in 8 to 10 seas and it's calm enough I could run my 17' Hydrostream WFO! Yes the new boats are faster, they're also way lighter since they don't have to be as strong as they used to. Walk up to a 25 yr old Donzi, Cigarette, or Magnum and whack it on the side and then do it to a new boat. Big freakin difference! You could drive a Buick into the side of one of the old boats and you'd total the car. The best Offshore (real) that I've seen recently is the Great Lakes Silver Cup series. Loved the race out of I think either Cleveland or Lorain where they (TV commentators) were talking to one of the factory class guys and asked him about the points leading Fountain in his class. The guy laughed at them and said, "wait till we get out from behind the break wall". He was right. The Fountain pulled him hard in the bay behind the wall. Soon as they hit open water it was all over. Real offshore is (was) Bob Nordskog, Don Arronow, Sandy Satoulo (sp?) and Betty Cook. Those people would all laugh at todays sport! Oh well, I never did take that class on how to win friends and influence people! Hope you enjoy the pix. Gary |

Panther
Bertram did a lot of testing in the old days using 16 mm film and frame by frame analysis they had every Strake combination and Placement Imaginable,That along with even trying to aerate the bottom thru the drilling of hundreds of holes ! (I also worked with the former director of Bertram racing before) My opinion is two fold #1 The Boats have a 22 ˝ Degree Bottom @ transom #2 Too much constant running surface!! Well this again was an opinion based on the way races were run once upon a time!! Now days who Knows?? the combination with its wide strakes may work just fine in the modern day arena! |
Any relation?
Is there any relation of the old Bertram and a Cougar? The bottom looks similiar?

Dry Martini
Mike, My friend rode in Dry Martini twice last year. First in the Pt. Pleasant Race, then in the Bay race. (John Trione). I sent him a really nice picture last year taking a turn in the Bay race.
Who is working on that boat these days? Is Kurt maintaining it? |
Panther
None that I can remember the Bertram is all USA they even claimed the Deck had some Aerodynamic Engineering (Claimed key word here) But Influences are a much different matter! The Bertram with the Straight Strakes way back then and the more recent boats does in fact cause one to wonder? |
Kurt bought Dry Martini several years ago and recently brought it back to racing standards. He even has the original AeroMarine engines. Ya gotta love the trailer.
Basically Kurt ownes the boat and lets the boys in the shop run her as long as they fix her up after the race. |
which year was arasaki produced? 1991 ?

another legend
Dr. Bob Magoon!

Please post more pix.

"Banana Split"
Not sure if it was a race-boat, but saw it many times hauling ass out of Port Everglades in the late 70's, as I sat at the end of the jetty thinking "someday..."
Do any of you know anything about this boat ? I think it may have been a Cigarette ? Thanks, hans |
Timucin, Arasaki was actually two boats. The first was super heavy and never did much. The second was built in the same mold but had a lighter layup. The paint was very similar but obvious when you see side by side photos. I haven't seen the boat in years. Its probably under a tarp at Kurts or back in Japan.

Re: When Racing was real!
man it wuld be great if we could put todays technology into races of yesterday. I remember as a kid seeing the real offshore races of yesterday on wide world of sports etc and thinking " wow thats friggin insane"I was like 10 or 12 years old and wrote a letter to cigarette saying how cool there boats were and they sent me a bunch of brochures and piks which all went on my bedroom wall..I was in heaven!! I also remember seeing offroad racing on tv like the baja 1000 and thinking these guys had balls too .. seemed so similiar. bouncing over big bumps as fast as you can trying not to die in the process. then I grew up...one down..I pulled off a class win in the 88 baja 1000 and hold 3 differnt 24 hour offroad world endurance records. now that Ive moved to the great lakes its time to try water. imagine if they took all the new laminate tech, built a 40 footer with lightweight materials but built it thick so it had some weight, maybe used one or no steps instead of 27, a couple decent hp motors and did the old point to point racing again, set a race date..if it was big and ugly that day..so be it..sure its nice to go 150 mph... but a real racer knows how to back off and keep stuff together..technology is nice but gone are the days when men were men, with a cigarette hanging out of the mouth, a beer in there dirty grease stained hands and a well earned chip on there shoulders.. now we have manicured pressed shirt wearing people sitting behind there cad programs plotting x dimensions trying to turn "offshore?" boats into drag boats..if I cared about kilo run bickering I would be on dragboatonly.com.. but I want to see some crazy mofo take his boat out in big ugly offshore conditions , hold on and stuff the throttles..hell I want to be the guy doing it!!!

Re: When Racing was real!
who knows, that was 2002....
anyway, it was a pile of 30-40 photos. My family has been boating since the 60's so it's possible some earlier photo's were mixed in with the bunch... :drink: |
Re: When Racing was real!
Ya'll made me dig into my old pictures to check the years. Half of them have rounded corners, which are stamped 77'. The others, including the one of Ajac does not have a year printed on the back of it so 78' is defintely possible since I was only 2 years old.. Only question I have is; which year was it that Beep Beep sunk and we lost Joel Halpern? This was the same race, I have 3-4 pictures of what's left of the boat being towed in. :(

Re: When Racing was real!
The thing I get from this thread is....everyone is saying I want to see this and the next person say's I want to see that.
The thing is if you are racing 50 miles offshore none of you are going to see anything. |
