How is the other boat coming?
|
Nice job!! That came out perfect.
|
Slowwwwwwwwww...
Bought the new boat and spent 2 wks getting it ready for the big lake. Then discovered that I enjoyed working on and riding the old motorcycles I was buying instead of letting them sit under covers like I intended. Then a couple month stint of no energy after work/weekends and went even farther behind. I am geeked to have the wife’s boat ready to go whenever spring shows up w/o an endless thrash like normal but the real desire is the project then offload hers 😉

You are correct. Great idea.
stupidest thing I’ve seen in a boat is an anchor locker forward of vee berth, no above deck access. So you crawl across your bed to get it (while it’s clean/dry) then return it while wet/dirty. Evidence either of designers who aren’t boaters or designers who never anchor out.

Should have installed and anchor locker while you had the jigsaw out. I so wish I had one in my boat.

Finally got some time in on the conversion project.
Been working on motors. Motor #1 now has all new ignition, rebuilt carbs, new impeller and t.stats. Motor #2 only needs carbs done (this wk) to match #2. I totally fk’d up paint jobs on them so that will need corrected and I still have to design graphics. Hopefully I’ll get bracket back off next wk so I can finish glass work, gel it, then reinstall permanently. Then I can start rigging. Sun lounge cushion is done and no longer has the hole for scoop. Came out great. Hope to start on the pad soon too. Hope to be ready by Spring 🤞🏁🌴🏴☠️ BTW, 70 days till boating season! |
Got some Gary time and locked myself in the shop for a while.
Transom is done and I filled the orig fuel fill location. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b61bb24814.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f5cff32c37.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7e59d36333.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ca140e03dc.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2976b24a44.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7566133c9d.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...80c82a576.jpeg |
Bracket is complete and installed.

Replaced the orig bow hatch which had a point to the front of it which was molded into the deck with a modern, square Bomar.
Which meant I had to form in the contour for the square front of the new hatch. One of the thousand things you don’t think of on a project like this. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...345a9311c.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7e5fc717e.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e2d7de93e.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...410e231b2.jpeg |

Sorry for the screw up. Awesome Job Gary... Looking really nice .

Headway.
Mounted the jack plates and hung the motors today. Then I punched out, sat in a lawn chair, drank, and stared at the boat. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...3e2aeaab8.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...64a6fd5bd.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1007f57c7.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0717e4e26.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...df0086098.jpeg |

Hey Gary, Boat looks great! Such a clean operation and look... Two question, is that a framed Swamp Rat on the wall holding the checker? Can u post more pics of your spare tire holder? That looks like one that would work.. Overall it looks like your taking advantage of the “stay home”. How’s the wife, gotta be slammed with work...
|
Thanks dude!
#1. Yes. Went through the museum last yr when we were down. Need to go back. #2. Will do.

Mocked up my e-bay steering and like what I see.
This weekend I start on my swap shop/e-bay trim tabs. Drilled a 2” hole through my new transom for a rigging tube and hit the OEM exhaust through hull location that I just filled! What are the odd’s? https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7ee1aef27.jpeg |
Let’s see, tabs are on (fkg barely!), cut the relief in the cockpit floor for the fuel fill hose which is now at the front of the tank where it should’ve been 35 yrs ago.
Also corrected my fk up on the tank build and had the sending unit port moved to the middle of the tank to be half ass accurate. And the tank is in for good. Added another set of bunks to the trailer to get the hull support that makes me happy. Im close to being able to have fire in my Fla motors to see what I really have. Compression is bouncing around, I think from coked rings. Some heat in them w/some Seafoam will tell all. The motivation from seeing this progress is beyond words 😉 Im thinking it may/will get wet this season, but as a rat rod. Pull it back down this fall and make it purdy . https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e85077628.jpeg Took some fiddling to make these fit. Bennett’s w/locators. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...84404a191.jpeg Barely.... https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...525db20d4.jpeg Don’t think I have room for much more tank. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1b6cd960a.jpeg |

So upon us figuring out who that person was in the pic, it got printed, framed, and hung on my childhood wall. It pretty much stayed there til my parents moved in 2000. Fast forward to the early 2000’s, I was working at a boat store and heard on the radio Big Daddy was to make an appearance at a car dealership down the road. When I heard that something deep inside was you have to go and shake the mans hand cause he was getting older. Kinda the last chance kinda thing. So, I decided to go and got the idea to take the print of that picture and get signed. It was kinda my way of making it full circle....
|
So I show up with all the other yahoos to meet Don and get inline. It was crazy to see all the middle age men line up with the die cast cars to get signed. What a bunch of DBs. You know the were there to get a signed car so the could put it on flee bay the next day for some big money... as the line proceeded I finally got my moment. I shaked don’s hand, shared a short kind word and slowly pulled out what I brought to get signed. Of course, it was that picture I stared at as a boy til I became a young adult. The one that was still in the old gold plated ornate frame from K-Mart. It still even had the 99 cent price tag on it. I won’t lie, fi fumbled and figured to pull it out of the frame. As I finally handed it over t be signed, dons eyes lit up!
|
Before I could get a word out he was inspecting and rattling off what swamp rat each of them were. Then he finally asked, “was that you in the pic...?” Yup! He signed and and we both shared a smile and thank you as the line had to continue moving.. I never got a definitive reaction but I truly feel he appreciated that as much as I did... sorry for the long winded response but I had to do my best to compare to your awesome narrative stories.
2. I still would dig some pics of that tire carrier. At some point when the kids get a little older I want to to back to the island. |
Great stuff!
Have heard similar stories from many. Hes the real deal. I was a huge drag race fan until it went all corporate 10 or so yrs ago. Paint the cars the same and can’t tell them apart. I loved the era of Bob Glidden, Warren Johnson, Joe Ammato etc, etc. Liked when they were all experimenting. Really enjoyed Pro Stock bike too until Harley got the NHRA to re-write the rule book for them. 2500cc v-twin’s against 1500cc in-line 4’s 😂 When I lived in Vermilion I drove my Super Bee to Norwalk Raceway Park, jacked it up, bolted on slicks, and went racing. The hard core Guys went crazy when they saw this. Told me that’s where it all started and thanked me for doing it. BTW, the tracks owner, Bill Bader just went on record saying he’s opening his track regardless of what the gov says! Says it’s all exaggerated and they have no clue who he is or what he needs! And sorry, forgot about your picture of the spare tire mount. Here ya go. Have done several this way and is a great way to keep it out of the way. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c546f3ce8.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ca64fda92.jpeg

Nice!
I put mine as close together as possible to preserve swim platform space. The starboard motor could have used the old exhaust port but port motor rigging port points straight at middle of transom. PS, your ****s way too pretty to run.

Yeah it's pretty tough swimming. I just climb up the tab and use the box to step up but it would be tough for the wife. She won't go in the water anyway..
|
I am working hard to preserve what little platform space I have.
My motors rigging ports are on starboard/front sides. So my starboard motors tube almost hit OEM exhaust port. Port motor rigging port points almost to center of transom, leaving port side of platform open. |
Yeah I know,it sucks that rigging tubes can't be run to the inside of the motor s for the Stbd side....
|
Missed this pic earlier.
Gorgeous dude. The Motors look perfect on there. |
