Default Hammond Challenger just getting started.

A few days ago I purchased a 82 Hammond Challenger MKII for $1000. I hope I didn't get hurt. I purchased knowing the possibilities of all the problems. i am hoping it will be a great project for me and my 19 year old son. Its going to be a slow process but hopefully fun and we will learn a lot. I would like to post updates of our progress if anyone is interested? First thing was a clean up after the long sit, then I tried to just turn it over, CLUNK! One clunk was enough lo , I pulled the belts of and removed the plugs lubricated very well and let sit for about 2 hours. Used a crow bar and a couple large bolts and success. I am getting ready to remove the exhaust manifold due to cracking. I have read several ways of repairing them but what would you guys suggest? Ways to repair, buy new exhaust manifolds , swap for headers? Of course there is a tight budget. thanks to all for any replies and please let me know if I should post this in a different category.

Good that it turned over. Compression test to make sure all is ok internally. 5.7l Merc 260? That's the stock engine in my 84 Challenger. IMO, don't waste effort repairing exhaust manifolds. No better way to ruin an engine if it ingests water. If your not looking for performance a set of replacement merc/glm manifolds/risers will work fine and last many years. Looking forward to your updates. Brings back great memories of working on my Challenger with my Father who has since passed. Enjoy every second of those moments!

I have 15 years of Hammond Challenger ownership and knowledge. Glad to help with any questions.

Wow very Nice, thanks for the reply. Update, after removing the exhaust manifolds and further inspection of the block I discovered a cracked block on both sides! Damn the luck but let the adventure begin. The question I ask now is what to do? Find a new block, go with a crate motor, bigger motor etc. Any suggestions would be greatly greatly appreciated!!
