Default Factory Billet Returning to the Shootout

A V-bottom showstopper is coming back to the top-speed event that helped put it on the high-performance powerboating map, https://www.offshoreonly.com/article...o-the-shootout.

From the OSO home page.

As we've done for the past several years, Jason Johnson and I will be adding Lake of the Ozarks Shootout "preview" stories almost daily in advance of the event. Look for one on American Ethanol to go live tomorrow.

If memory serves, the current Lake of the Ozarks Shootout V-bottom speed record is 165 mph and was set by Dennis and Jason Parvey. Did I miss something? Or is my memory not serving?

A V-bottom hitting 187 at LOTO would be front page here everyday for a year. I don't think that is accurate.

A kilo run and a shootout are not the same and take a completely different approach to attempting.

Ah, now I see the confusion—and your statement is 100 percent accurate. The current APBA V-bottom kilo record, set by an Outerlimits in 2014, is 180.464 mph. Per APBA rules, breaking a kilo record requires at minimum a 3 percent minimum increase in average top speed (during two full kilometer runs in opposite directions in a given time period), which means an average speed of 185-plus-mph for any would be record-setter. A tall order, to be sure.

Kilo runs are actually time on a measured course and the average speed is derived through that timing. The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, on the other, is a solo-boat (exhibition runs excepted) drag race on a straight course (this year and last three-quarters of a mile) to a radar-caputured top speed.
