Sterndrives will not go down..

Hello Everyone,

I purchased a 38 foot powerquest boat a couple of weeks ago and I am trying to figure out why the drives do not go down.. I have power when I push the switches up and hear the pumps but, when I push the switches in the down position there is no sound of the sterndrive pumps .. Any ideas would be helpful for this newbie powerboater ..

Which boat did you buy?

alindquist 09-17-2018 02:58 PM

check the relays on the pump...

Go to the trim pump and jump the solenoid. The green wire is for down, blue is for up, just ran into this issue last weekend. You can get a new solenoid from napa if that is your issue.

trim down for what????

I had a similar issue a few weeks ago when it wouldn't go down. I checked the package and it said that "If it stays up for more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention."

On a more serious note, check the solenoids.

I had a feeling you might say that. I crawled around it when it was in Dallas before going to CA. It has been sitting for a while, you may just need to bump the solenoids to get everything moving again.

Good luck.

LOL ... Maybe I should check for Unilateral Phase Detraction as well.. HAHA Thanks for the Info Too Stoked

Dumb question do you have the keys in the on position?

Sydwayz 09-17-2018 08:12 PM

First things first, try jumping the solenoids.
BIGSLOW is correct.
Green wire is for down (green, grass, down)
Blue wire is for up (blue, sky, up)

It does seem a little odd that both are not working, but it could happen.

Tip: IF you are going to replace a trim solenoid, replace BOTH of them on the pump, up and down. 3 bolts pulls out the 2 solenoids. If one is dead, the other is likely not far behind, and they are cheap my boat parts standards. Keep the spare, used, good one on board in case of emergency or to toss to a friend if needed.

I do have the keys in the on position.. when i push the switch up i hear the pumps for the sterndrive but when i push the down switch there is nothing.. I was gonna check the solenoids

Are you using the "trailer" switches on the dash and have you tried the trim button on the side of the throttle?

I'd assume solenoids as well.

frickstyle 09-21-2018 01:43 PM

Also check backside of trim switches. Possible the ring terminals popped off the switch, but odd for it to do on both....

You also seem to have problems with starting this boat (other thread). Why not pay a marine or good auto mechanic to come look at it for 2 hours? May save you days of aggravation?....

The trim button on the throttle does the same thing .. Does not go down but goes up ... Same with the dash switches...

Check the down solenoid

if this was in the add of the one you bought on EBAY someone need a talking to. hope you get it sorted out and start to have fun on it

Click the clicker a hundred times. There is dust in your solenoid between the points. That will knock it out. Why do I know?

Check all your power wire connections on the back of the dash switches.
The throttle switch is wired off the dash switches with a diode to prevent being backfed.
The throttle switch won't work if the dash switches don't work.
