Gil manifold to riser studs stuck!! Any "tricks"?
Hey Guys,
Looks like someone used wrong studs - aluminum manifolds, stainless risers, half the studs broke off when removing, others need replacing.......but have to get them out. Tried WD-40 overnight, tried heat with a torch (yes vented engine room first and had extinguisher handy) - nojoy. Is there a trick to this or am I destined to cut off wheel and drilling them out? Thanks! |
WD is more of a lubricant, try a penetrant like pb blaster. But more importantly get a stud removing socket. That way you can get some serious leverage on it. |
If part of the stud (assuming steel) is sticking out place a washer over it, then weld in place. Then take a nut and weld on washer, the welding heats it usually enough to break it free.
Otherwise try a left had drill and then an easy out with heat |
Ford dealerships have a penetrating fluid they use on spark plugs and head bolts. Let fluid soak over night and you should be good. I don’t recall the name of the stuff but apparently it was formulated specifically for frozen spark plugs in aluminium heads. |
Try a mixture of 50% acetone and 50% automatic transmission fluid and let that soak overnight. |

Apply penetrating oil (AeroKroil or equivalent) and fill the spark plug well justabove where the jamb nut hex sits" |
👍 Agree with AllDodge. Worked for me many times in automotive work. |
Yeah - Swampy doesnt weld (never tried, dont have the gear). Got all but 2 out.....broke small enough to not have more than a 3/4inch to grab. Trying penetrating fluid overnight and more heat .... really slowing my project down PITA! Luckily I have Columbus day off to screw with it some more!

Tuff to drill steal bolts out of aluminum, if you get to that. Left hand drill bits are worth the investment. Sometimes they grab the bolt and unscrew it. Last resort pull manifold and take to machine shop. Don't know if there is enough meat there to put in a heli-coil with out getting in the water passage. Somebody here knows.

Got all of em out except 2 with heat and many four letter words. Very carefully drilled out the two after grinding them flush - small bit with slightly bigger until I got to a point were I could tap them. Also mounted new water circulation pumps and brackets for heat exchangers. I think I lost 15 pounds of sweat today .......bbbbeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer me
