Bad azz! F1/Cig ad
F1 in Miami would be insane. And I'm not even a huge F1 fan. But I'd love to be there for that. |
Its on my bucket list, they were just in Austin...........cool video

I follow F1 and to those of you who can't be dragged away from Indy or NASCAR, it really is worth it just to see one race before making a final decision. :) Street races are generally less exciting than a dedicated track race because there's usually less overtaking opportunities and they can be a bit of a procession. However, if you are familiar with the streets and the area, they are a great spectacle. I don't know Miami and that video looks a bit far fetched in terms of a circuit but if they can create a circuit through the streets and a bit of waterfront, you should be hoping they include Miami in coming years. Looks amazing. RR . |
I read about it. Ive been following F-1 forever. Their technology is more advanced than NASA. Theyre currently running a dumb ass hybrid configuration of a turbo v-6 w/a 160 hp elec motor. Theyre claiming a combined 1000 hp so that means their tiny 1 liter motor is making 840 hp! Tolerances are so tight on the motors they have to run warmed oil through it before starting. Before they screwed up the motor rules they were running v-8’s that turned 24,000 rpm! Almost everything is carbon fiber including the suspension components. The last few yrs have been pretty lame but an American co. just bought them are making changes. They used to have an IMSA race in Miami back in the ‘80’s. They had a one yr deal on the table but are now working on a 10 yr contract. |

Are we so excited about Cigarettes involvement that we're not questioning the new power that reminds me of a 5.7L 260 I had years ago? With all the effort to capture the F1 sound, we can't get Merc Turbos at 6k in the back ground? Cool nonetheless. |
Looks like they left the ladder down........:D

I'm a massive F1 fan. Haven't missed a race live since 1999. Me and the family just got back from Austin after going down there for the 1 US race. Miami would definitely be cool.
Technology is unreal. Truly unreal. 1,000HP out of 1.6L V6's and the motors have to last 7-8 races. Electric power generation through both kinetic energy capture and turbo charger heat. Aerodynamic Engineering well beyond anything any of us pea brains can imagine. New "windshield" is actually just a carbon fiber Halo designed to protect the driver. Lots of pissing and moaning about it by fans but it was one of those things that you got used to after about 10 minutes. The structure has to be strong enough to support the weight of one of those Double Decker English buses. |
That 'halo' structure possibly save the life of a driver a couple of months ago. Had a big crash where Alonso, in the orange car, was pushed over the top of Le Clerc, in a white car and the halo sustained damage but didn't fail. Without the halo, the driver's head/helmet would have taken the full impact. Le Clerc later admitted that he was not previously a fan of the new regulations requiring a halo but he is now. He believes it saved his life. Here's the halo after the accident https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...abd653a897.jpg RR |
Been to about 10 F1 races, 10 Indy's, 2 Nascar, 3 NRHA, tons of smaller circuit stuff. All have their identity and are fun. Stopped watching F1 because it became more about the technology than the actual driver and racing. If I were pope of the joint I'd eliminate half the crap (actually over half the crap), make 'em shift like they used to and actually drive the car instead of fly it. I watch no F1 now.

I have a friend who was a unlimited truck desert racing champ. He moved to Concord to get into Nascar. He also introduced me to you Tank in 2011 in KW. We have discussed F1 for hours over cocktails. The unlimited budget and beyond NASA tech as Gary stated has kept me engaged for years. Nascar going in a perpetual left hand turn for hours on end bores me. I will watch Nascar for the road races.

Sort of a hijack but nothing beat :
1. Flat track motorcycles on a dirt mile. 2. The original CanAm series, it really was run what you brung with few rules. Mclaren, Jim Hall's Chaparral and eventually the monster Porsche 917. |
I Went to Miami last weekend for the F1 Experience exhibition. I was talking to one of the planners. A lot of the people are complaining about it and are against it due to noise... However, the planners want to have it down along Biscayne for 2 reasons, 1. After 3PM its in the shade from the buildings and 2. The sound off the buildings echo is unreal! See below.
This was last Sunday, of course, if you are a fan of F1 you know that this is a 4 year old car and they dont sound like this anymore... At only 15 feet away the sound on the video breaks up because of its so loud and high pitch. |
They used to have a killer IMSA race in Columbus. The stuffed shirt, liberal locals *****ed every yr (4) they had it. They had a 3 yr contract w/the city but managed 4. Ill never forget, end of yr 4, local news shoved a microphone in Jim Truemans (Red Roof Inns, True Sports Indy team) face and asked him how much money they lost. He lit them up! (He was a stud) Since the new owners have taken over F-1, they turned up boost on the cars, reduced wing size, increased tire size. They then broke every track record this season. Still boring though. Go to YouTube, search “Ayrton Senna qualifying at Monaco”. Then turn the volume knob to 11, and turn your phone off and witness magic. Most believe, best qualifying lap ever. As David Hobbs would say, “ giant attachments”! Thats what’s missing now. Car, driver, tires, all at 10/10’s. You can’t sense the speed when the cars are stuck to the track. A full lock, 4 wheel drift, over a blind crest, around a blind corner, w/o lifting..... Nascar...... 😝 We watch for lap records not wrecks, I once got an empty beer can to the head after educating a table of red necks (red neck bar) that at tthe filming of Days of Thunder, Tom Cruise was within 2/10’s of the lap record at Talledega (w/no training) so how hard could it be😂 No, none of the table of five would admit to me (by myself) who threw the can. Nascar ......🤣 Indy car is now all identical spec racers too so who cares? |

F1's real downfall is that To watch F1 you have to REALLY be a fan. You have to understand the strategies, technology, tracks, tires, rules and regulations, players, personas and all the grandeur that makes F1 the biggest sport in the world.
Like Indy just mentioned, last week we scanned our tickets and immediately walked up on turn 11 at Austin and the rain was coming down and when that first car came barreling down towards us, Even as an avid fan, I assumed his brakes had failed and he was going to end up 100 yards into the parking lot but he slammed on the brakes whipped around the turn and blew off into the distance - All in the pouring rain. It was unreal. That was my kids' first 20 seconds of "live" F1-their eyes were 3 inches in diameter. I revelled in listening to my 7 yard old jabber on endlessly about who was on ultra soft tires, who was on supersoft tires, whether they were on "hot laps" based on the amount of Sparks the skid plates were generating as they went through the turns and then insisting I turn my F1 app on so he could figure out how quickly Lewis was gaining on the Ferrari. Listening to him talk about how the mercs were gaining 3tenths a lap on the Ferrari was music to my ears!!!! I'd love if Miami could happen and grow US interest in the sport..... As a Lewis fan, I love thinking it's all over bar the shouting..... Roll on Sunday afternoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Way cool about your 7 yr old getting it! I think they claim 3 - 4 g’s in the turns.I think the swimming pool complex at Monaco best shows the cars abilities of direction change. They didn’t have it this season but normally have a camera shooting straight at them. They appear to ignore physics in their brutal direction changes. The current race coverage and commentators pretty well suck IMO. I would love to see them go back to single car, no rules, qualifying instead of the chess games they now play. I read that back in the unlimited turbo days of the ‘80’s where they allowed a “qualifying” engine that could then be replaced after qualifying that most of the engines had ZERO salvageable internal parts! Were rumors of 1500 hp motors! Take a beer and peruse YouTube videos of the motors on dynos. They have dynos that simulate gear changes and track layouts! One cool clip is a British team (Menard?)warming the motor and the engineers have it play “god save the queen”!

Find the video of the Red Bull car doing doughnuts on top of a sky scraper for a PR video! lifted the car by helicopter. |

Nothing like the older cars. When I sat at the hairpin for the first time at the Canadian GP I got there as the cars were starting their qualifying on Sat. I could hear this car screaming in the distance, and I mean far away, as it got closer the screaming got louder and louder until finally it came screaming down the short straight before the hairpin. About 50 yards from the turn my first thought was I was going to witness the death of a driver he was going so fast...honestly I have no idea but it was FAST, no way he would stop that machine. Sure enough in an incredibly short distance the brakes glowed red and he slowed to maybe 30 mph or so to negotiate the hairpin then rocketed off...we all looked at each other and were like WTF. Nothing like it, and I've seen all racing...nothing.

Been a motorsports fan and a F1 fan since I was a kid, that has been a constant in my life for 55+ years except for a few breaks when drivers got killed, thanks to the halo and many other safety features I'm hopeful there wont be more. This year has been particularly interesting and I look forward to the next race. I will be in Miami for the first one if I can..

There is a fantastic 4+ min video promo from Miami on Facebook that is epic but I can't find it anywhere to share it here.

Anyhow, if it comes to fruition I hope there is a place to have a flotilla to watch via boat at the water front. If they go around the AAA there should be plenty of space! Keith |

Hard to beat the genuine sound of an F1 car....... |
Agreed! Just watched Brazil on tape last night and hated: their hybrids are now called “power units”.They are no longer, flame spewing, ear piercing, obnoxious ENGINES. They are PC power units. Whoever created that rule change, totally misread F-1s fan base. The new body work totally enclosed the ENGINES. No pipes, no nothing. I thought I read somewhere the new owners were looking at changing it back to where the ENGINE was part of the focus. The grid penalties are insane too. Should be an interesting off season. New owners tried to end the $16 million participation grant for Ferrari but buckled last minute. I look for that to be back on the table 😉

The sounds is not what it used to be but it's still, pretty impressive. I watch the GP's on TV rather than attend the circuits, better coverage and the sound doesn't matter so much. I also get to sit in a local bar surrounded by Thai lovelies that help keep my glass full and my ego stroked. F1 has it's detractors, tree hugging greenies and environmentalists and the FIA pander to that a little to keep on side with the public. Safety issues (which we all agree with) have probably held progress back too. Worth a read is Adrian Newey's book if you get a chance. A lot about design, some funny stories and he makes his thoughts about Ferrari and favoritism pretty obvious. Lol. RR https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0794edfce7.jpg |

I understand the need for change but I have a problem w/a marketing dept controlling motorsports. i.e. NASCAR and NHRA etc. I hate the new halos but that should be the drivers call. Thx for the tip on the Newey book. The guys an absolute genius and I am a fan. Perfect timing for a new book asI just finished Brownies 😬

I'm not much of a reader, if it's not about boats or cars, I won't touch it. Brownie's book was a great entertaining read. Newey's is full of techie stuff from his aerodynamicist point of view, a lot about himself and his life but several good little stories, a bit like Brownie in some ways, alcohol and high profile lifestyle antics. Doing donuts on Christian Horner's front lawn, riding motorbikes into the harbour at Monaco, the usual stuff! Took me a bit more time to read than Brownie's but well worthwhile. RR . |
The manufacturers are not willing to go back to pure N/A engines - they have too much invested in the hybrid powers units and their learnings in F1 have driven their road car capabilities to insane levels. Plus they realize that hybrids are the way of the future at all automotive levels (Ferrari LaFerrari, Mclaren P1, Mercedes One are all hybrids as a result of F1). They were a significant force in pushing back engine proposals for 2021 that called for simplifying the formula. As much as we all miss the sound, wed all rather have a set of Merc 1350's over a set of Hawk 525's. Technology rules unfortunately, but they still have a neat sound when you are there in person.... Ferraris "nostalgia" bonus is actually 100M. Which I despise. That money would do wonders for the midfield which has produced a good scrap this year..... |
