MTI 340X Showdown—300R Versus 400R

Despite varying testing conditions, it was still fun to compare Mercury Racing’s new 300R to its Verado 400R in terms of powering MTI’s twin-engine 34-foot cat.

Great article; Mercury Racing 400R vs 300R.

Very interesting to see the performance comparison in hard numbers. (Photos courtesy of Boating Magazine and Rossman signature on OSO).

Do the new 300R need 93 octane to reach 300 HP like the 400R's need?

Who makes the carbon fiber tie bar on the 300R boat? Looks sick

That is a big plus.

Zeiger/Everett Performance. The company has a new carbon-fiber tie bar in the works, it's not available yet...the one on the Mercury boat is a wrap.

So.......After reading this, is it fair to assume that we who have been waiting for Mercury to roll out a new 450 or 500R will be disappointed when we only see a couple of mph gain and barely a second better midrange number over the venerable 400????

Weight is the concern to many.

Weight is a big deal and when you can save up to 300 lbs at the transom by going twin 300R's it's an attractive proposition for the smaller boats. The service cost, reliability, and noise levels are of course other factors that might be of difference. Once the Nordic 28SS with twin 300R's gets dialed in, it will be interesting to see if the performance difference won't be a lot narrower than the same comparison on the MTI 340X.

Will be interesting to see the 300R’s strapped to a 28 Skater ...
