Myco trailer
I have a aluminum triple axle trailer from Myco that I barely use. I picked my boat from storage this past Saturday and took it get some paint touch up work. Then I noticed the back support beam separated with the welds. There welding on these trailers are very poor. They are not even chamfered where the ends meet just butted together. Speaking with other guys they also experienced the same problem with cracking. Buyer beware.https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7e7772e12d.jpg

ouch

That SOB looks to be cracked all the way threw, also below the center clearance light. I wouldn't tow that trailer any where with weight till it has been repaired. Crazy!
|
.
curious if Broward trailers fixes issues like these of other manufacturers as per Nascat, Broward also puts a long "spine" support down the middle ==> https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...ml#post4679923 diamond tab in that broken area ==> https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...ml#post4680038 . |

Attached is a pic of my Broward Trailer currently in production for my Nor-Tech 390.
Note the additional gusseting on the crossmember right where yours has failed. I'm no engineer, but I'm thinking that installing a tail lamp there isn't helping matters. Just my $.02.https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...959e2d83b1.jpg |
I had a few welds crack over time on my former aluminum welded Myco, but not that one. A buddy had one of the first aluminum welded McClain trailers and it did crack in several places across the tail section. It was repaired by another shop with a a lot of overlap gussets. Knowing what I know now about gussets in roll cages of race cars (latest hobby), I know what I’d watch for on a welded trailer if one is in my future. It looks like NASCAT’s trailer is going to have a bolt on (mandatory by DOT) triple clearance light in that spot over/aft of the seam/gusset/welds. |

I had to repair a few welds on my trailer, but that is a spot you don't want failing. Aluminum welds are brittle and not ideal for the vibration that our trailers go through. Weld prep and the correct heat input are vital.

Baja- it appears that you are located in PA.
I fowarded the pic you posted to Jim Nall & Mark Bonafide @ Broward. If your boat & trailer are located anywhere near Florida, Broward will be more than happy to make the repair as well as look over the other cross members to get you up and running again. |
Wow, that's not a good spot for a weld failure at all. I'm surprised there is no tabbing in that area.
|
Nascat, I'm in PA I lined up a fabricator to fix the issues thanks, your trailer looks sweet, much better built than Myco. I'm going to copy there diamond design to strengthen the framing. Thanks for the input!

is the part that split C channel or boxed ?

I'll make sure to post pics once the skid channel is installed.

Baja.......how old is the trailer.......and its a trip axle under a 27' boat ??

My trailer is 32 years old 6” channel steel galvanized Has a channel running under on underside Keel on it’s own roller channel We are going to add a drive guard , do some repairs where the bunks mount , have it blasted and galvanized again . Be good for another 32 years . https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...34456a2ce.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f6bb3fc39.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0b49c1bf0.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...67417f3bf.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9b1264bbb.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...23d960582.jpeg |

Have you called Myco about this? Why not talk with them first?
That is an older trailer.... I know they made some changes in '08 in how the welds were done.... And I think they changed the lights at the same time..... The ones with the big lights are the older trailers... Its odd how that tore... it should be tighter in that area, pushing in, not pulling out.... Was it hung up on a low spot at a ramp or curb and pulled free? The long ones have a flat bottom on the rear crossmember to reduce the chance of catching.... |
Tim G. It is an 06, but that does not matter how old it is, The welding is very poor with no penetration, and also it needed to be chamfered as well this would have made it a proper weld. I'm not the only one either this has happened to. For the money they charge it is poor workmanship. No I did not call them , what could they do, sent it back to us so we could fix it??? pay to trailer it Florida and back.

Mine broke in that area as well, not a fault of myco, but a steep grade in Solomans that tore and bent it. I had it fixed, added a gussett and solid I beams welded to the next bend. I also added 2 holes to through bolt a sacrificial steel skid pad, as steel will slide better than the softer Aluminum. i put a rubber coating on one side of the steel. I also put steel fenders on as i was tired of the aluminum bent ones. i undercoated the fenders and used well nuts and nylon washers to secure it and no galvanic corrosion and the steel fenders have lasted for 5 years and going strong

Have you owned it since new ? what size boats have been on it over the last 14 years ?

A few pics of my Broward Trailer that's about to complete. Notice all the diamond patch reinforcements + the skid channel that ties all the forward cross members together. Seems like a smart design. |
Hmmm, I have 5 Mycos; 2007, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018 with well over 40,000 miles between all of them and have had 0 welding issues.
|
.
I just noticed that not all MYCO's are built like the OP's This frame-style trailer has no "v" in the center that is welded, thus eliminating that issue Wright Performance 360 @ Performance Boat Center "Pull It in Style" https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...fe454b0446.jpg |
Cat trailers don't have Vs since the bunks are mounted high up and clearance for the hull that a V-hull needs isn't necessary.

ouch plumbers crack. I had some crack in the middle of the channel where the cross beam attaches,it push's in the middle, flexing, they offered to fix it free, ad gussets etc, long way and cost make 2 trips. I had a buddy weld them and added 2 diff gussets on them.Just added brace and foot spot to winch stand,im still pretty happy with my trailer, but I dont trailer much.prob spend to much time polishing than using it.

Mine broke at the Ticfaw run. The other side was about to break also. Broke where it transitions from straight rails to the tongue. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c0c9ca8c78.jpg
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...8ef36dedfe.jpg Fortunately there was a local guy that knew what he was doing to fix it. Sandwiched the joints with 1/2" plate and seal welded it. Myco said my hitch was too rigid so I bought a torsion hitch like Nascats. |
YIKES!!
Appears that Myco just filled the pie cutout w/ welding rod. I can't see inside the C-Channel but pictured here are 3 new trailers I've had built from 2 different manufacturers (Myco Competitors) and both have gusseting and reinforcing in that area. I've never seen any fatigue in that area.https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d45d0be4eb.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...dd334d2d68.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...600a5221ff.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e7c66b5e1b.jpg |

Broward Trailer boxes internally all joints and bends for added strength Broward Trailer goes to the extra effort of boxing the inside of any joints like this, welded or bent. We have never had an issue. |

Myco said my hitch was too rigid so I bought a torsion hitch like Nascats. I ask b/c being told your hitch is TOO rigid seems like a crock when 99% of the ball mounts out there in USE are rigid? As much as I love my setup, torsion hitches can't make up 1/10th of 1% of all ball mounts sold over the years so I sorta question explanation WarParty was given. |
