Knowing Bullhead I would suspect his delivery slot had this already included in his ordering decision. And rightfully so. Looking forward to seeing some of these run.

2.6L v. 4.6L

No replacement for displacement...

450R

"40% higher torque than the 400R"
12.5 % higher HP than the 400R
~58% - 88% higher price than the 400R
approximately the same weight as a 400R

I wonder what Merc's plan is...Things aren't looking good for the 400R...

Straight out of the SOTW story!
And Mercury Racing has plenty of 450R outboards right now available for order and delivery. According to Stuart Halley, the company's general manager, there are "literally hundreds" of finished 450Rs boxed and ready to ship.

That explains the wait time on those 300R motors, then. All the blocks and cowls went to the 450R production line!

So we’re any 34 MTI’s or 36 DW’s retrofitted ? Is so what we’re some of the performance changes ? Tough to compare when your looking at quads , quints and so on ! Would be more interesting to compare a twin engine application.

Not trying to be a smart ass but what is the huge advantage of a 450 vs. 400 in a center console setup? I guess I get it for the catamaran applications. It means more acceleration and top end. That market seems pretty small still. I don’t see a huge benefit for cc. Can someone explain?

I think it's the torque increase that makes it a big step up. That said, I'm a little confused too. If you've got 2, 3 or 4 x 400's hanging of the back of a centre console, do you really need more torque? Nice to have but at a considerable price difference.

Help me out if I'm missing something....?

I hear you guys loud and clear when you say 400 vs 450 whats the big deal, BUT I don't think the development of this engine is about propelling 30-34' cats 5mph faster or a 30-40' Center Console to the fishing hole that much faster.

IMO the 450 offering helps support the MANY boat manufacturers out there that have gone WAY bigger & or entered the o/b world.

Case in point, boat builders like HCB, MTI & Nor-Tech's 50ft+ offerings and now the cruiser OEM's like Formula, SeaRay & Ocean Alexander who are either modifying their current models or now offering o/b models.

I just returned from a trip to the Abaco's and was taken back by the # of large 40'+ Sport Fishing boats that actually have full walk around cockpits and are powered by o/b's. Beautiful, versatile boats that spend their entire lives in saltwater now enjoy the ease of maintenance associated w/ o/b's not to mention the overall savings on their maintenance costs.

In summary OEM's and buyers like the simplicity, reliability, saltwater sustainability & power to weight ratio of o/b engines, but boaters aren't going to entertain these larger boats that are $500k+ that top out at 50mph. Every boat out there can't accommodate 6 o/b's across it's beam. I also believe that we'll see more performance cats & vee's in the 36'+ range from OEM's like Donzi, Mystic, Outerlimits now w/ this 450R offering. I say this knowing those boats are going to be limited to just 4 engines across their transoms.

As always just one mans $.02!

More hp and torque is always a big deal. Always has been. What am I missing ?
