I use a Compaq Presario 2710 and have had no problems.
If you can go wireless I print and use the internet from anywere in my house!
We also use it for DVD's on the boat (not to often) but hey I'm glad I have the option. One more thing to consider is a nice wireless mouse.

We have 3 Gateway desktops and 2 gateway laptops, 2 Compaq laptops all running XP prof with no problems

Have a Sony Vaio, bought it for features that link it to my Garmin GPS, and my Ericson cell. It works like a charm. Many of the features that you're looking for, versatile and not too pricy.
