Prop Deal Gone Wrong
Want to preface the story with...not looking for money to be returned just want to solicit opinions. Not gonna name drop either but these were purchased from OSO. On to the story. Last year we cracked a LH prop...during my search of new ones I came across a pair that was deemed “in good shape, no cracks, need nothing”. I say fine I’ll take them and make the payment. Got them in...they were shiney and from the outside looked good. Honestly don’t remember inspecting them at all. Shame on me. Threw them on and went boating. Fast forward to this year and im noticing the inside of the hubs are completely rotted. To my dismay now I have to throw them away and find new ones again. Should I be pissed that the seller wasnt straight forward or should I be pissed at myself for not looking them over at the time of sale. Either way this sucks....here are some pics of prop and texts. What do you think? |
|
Here is the condition of the prop. It’s un-usable...to the people wondering if they were deliverable in good shape and corroded over the year. We don’t keep our boat in the water and always run thru fresh water (river) on the way back to the marina. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...12a0f29a2.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...aeb229bef.jpeg |
What do you want an opinion about??
|
Whether I should be pissed that the seller duped me or if I should be pissed at myself for not inspecting them when I received them...lol. Basically have $600 paperweights now!!! |
It’s a buyer beware world especially with used boat parts. Many of us are too busy to pop open a box the day it arrives, but after that amount of time and use it’s on you. |
That’s rotted out? I see some scale but is it really worse than the picture? |
Year later its on you. Sorry. That being said, they dont look unusable to me.
|
i think those are just casting flaws, ive never seen a prop rust through

On you...and the props are still good to use....
|
What pitch prop? |
You bought them a year ago, handled them, installed them and now you are pondering if you got screwed because of surface oxidation making a few casting imperfections visible? Even in the top pic of post#2 shows some scaling that is oxidized in your post#3 on the flange...(BTW - I have seen props look like that after cleaning with acid over the years and the boat was land locked Fresh water)
What drew you attention to the props being considered NFG at this point? Did the hub burn through or |
When buying a product that is less than 50% of new you have to define what the sellers definition of "good" condition is versus what you expect. If you want new condition than find a used set for sale that is no doubt in that condition or do yourself a favor and buy new. To answer your question bluntly you got what you paid for.

My desk could use new paper weights, depending on pitch. I’ll give you 200 plus shipping for them. I would put them on my boat, I mean desk. |
Ive never seen a prop fail , from some pitting in the webs. That is the most
difficult part on a prop to cast. Run the **** out of them . To late to complain , its on you. |
Thanks for the feedback guys. The pitting is pretty significant on 2 of the hubs and less so on the third. if I can find another prop I’m probably gonna swap this one out. It looks more significant than surface corrosion to me. I can almost stick a screw driver in them.

You'll throw a blade on them, especially if they have ever been lab finished, well before you'd ever have a webbing failure. As others have stated, that is not corrosion.
|
Concur as casting surface gas defect in the nickel based material which is not uncommon. Manufacturers usually have a pass/fail criteria (depth, length, width, etc..) addressing visual surface or NDE detected defects based on engineering data or industry standards.
Like stated above, the possibility of having a blade failure is greater than the web giving away. Run them before assuming they are paperweights. OR |
If you getting rid of a single RH 26p I’d be interested. |
|
Decided to pull the prop...you can see thru the webs. it’s pretty bad. Anyone ever see this before? |
No sir I have not. But your right, if you blow the picture up I’m pretty sure you can see light through the hole. |
looks like damage from electrolysis

as for your deal, a year later... I wouldn’t post, I would accept as lesson learned. Inspect upon purchase |
There was a post on that FB thing this season of two fancy brand new outboards that had the lowers literally eaten off from electrolysis. They were only in the water for a week. Most the other slips were fine but it’s supposed the next slip upstream had an issue. |

When I was restoring my Comp 6 years ago I shelled out like $5k for new 1/4 Canopies. They sat in a crate never opened for 2+ years while the boat was being re-rigged and painted. When I finally get the boat back the newly-installed canopies had a massive amount of distortion in them - like looking through a fun house mirror. Call the manufacturer and they are like, well your rigger must have polished them or something to cause that. My rigger is like, we've been rigging HPs boat our entire lives. We didn't do a dam thing to them but take off the protective plastic. Long story short, I can't say a word because the Canopies had been shipped so long ago. I bought new ones from a different manufacturer at half the price and they are awesome. I ate the $5k and the cost of install as an expensive boating lesson and moved on. You have no beef with the seller now. Move on. |
What happened to all the buyers lining up? :party-smiley-004: |

I don't think you got screwed if you got one season out of used props. If their not slowing down the boat or causing any problems while underway why not keep using them until something gives?
