The Benihana races on the San Francisco Bay were awesome...... I watched them from a tug boat under the Golden Gate...... Fun until you get sea sick waiting for them to return after 45 minutes / maybe an hour, in the Pacific Ocean. The spectators were the crew & family/friends.
The Parker 8 hour - then 6 hour Enduro, ( Inboard & out board tunnels & 'V' bottoms / Mod VP's ) popular due to it's running the river next to the population on the river's edge. But it's not on TV..... But a LOT of beer drinking!!!
Formula 1 tunnelboats are like a "3 ring circus"...... They return each year as an event at a local city. VERY popular locally.... Minimal TV coverage.... But during F1 PROP series, we had an independent film crew, and had a fairly good TV deal.
I am now near to the Sarasota Off Shore races..... VERY popular locally. Minimal TV coverage.
Notice NASCAR, many INDY Car races....... 1/2 grandstands filled... Or grandstands are smaller now..... Very good TV coverage.
Off Shore can stay popular if they stick with CONSISTENCY at locations. And get a TELEVISION package deal.
Until then it will continue to be a hobby sport, like SCCA sport car racing......which is very popular locally. And no TV coverage.
I always thought the new way to get noticed in Off Shore Racing is acquire an independent film company and show it on something like NETFLIX??

if you think offshore racing is dying then you have not paid attention to what opa has had this season. most races I believe have had 60+ boats with great racing. I think there have been 10 plus super stocks, 7+ supercats, the class 1 boats have had 4-5, then look at the super v light classes with great turnouts in both of those classes and great racing as well
So the boats don't do the so called spectacular races miles offshore where no one can see them. when was the last time that happened anyway? I do agree that some of the course (key west) have been shortened too much, but overall the spectators have been turning out and have been rewarded with great competitive races

OFFSHORE RACING is a hobby at best

You want to find out how popular offshore racing is ? Charge $50 a ticket to spectate and you'll see what the fan base is, basically zero. Even for free the majority of the people there are enjoying a beach day that happens to include some loud boats.
