I started going to Clearwater in the late 60s before the developers knocked down all the mom and pop hotels it was the most chill place in fl. Still beautiful beaches but it’s become a police state. I lived there for 25 years before busting out to Costa Rica and now colombia
it is no more a "police state" than any areas in the USA.
Also Costa Rica and the central Americas comes with it's own new sets of things to worry about. We had a family business there for many years, while it is beautiful it is not a place to live IMO, only visit.
