CG Documentation forms to transfer/file lien
So - I'm documenting a boat I just purchased. He has signed and notarized the back of the CG Document (no liens).
I assume I can fill out form 1258 - Exchange of Documentation and submit with a copy of the signed CG Document
Then, since I have a loan on the boat with USAA I can fill out form 5542 and note USAA as the new Lien Holder?
Anyone done this recently?

I cracked it - the people at the National Vessel Documentation Center are incredibly helpful.
You simply send in the Certificate of Documentation signed & notarized by the former owner and form CG -1258 noting an Exchange of Documentation to the new owner. In the absence of the signed Certificate of Documentation you can use CG-1340 (Bill of Sale).
Interestingly, you do not have to have an up to date Certificate of Documentation - you can use an expired one as long as no change in ownership has occurred.

Exactly. I had let my Certificate of Documentation lapse for 12 years. When i sold the boat the USCG Documentation Center told me to use form CG-1340 and everything was good. Some of this documentation stuff is simple, call the USCG first and possibly save some money. ed
