Sealing exhaust tips
 

OK, now that I have my exhaust pipe sealed on the outside, I hope, I find that there is a larger hole in the transom than the pipe diameter which leaves a gap as seen from the inside of the transom engine compartment. Should I be safe and inject 4200 into that space so it seals around the pipe on the inside of the transom and slide the rubber tube on the exhaust pipe up against the inside transom or just leave And alone. Thanks guys for your dedication and your help for us need to know people

I would think as long as the flange is sealed and the screws are you are fine.

Keep in mind that if an exhaust coupler leaks, water can run down the bottom of the exh pipe. You don't want to leave a space where that water can puddle where the pipe enters transom. I would either seal it or cut a notch at the bottom of the holes so any water that does appear there can drain to bilge and not puddle in the gap. Obviously, if there any exposed wood, that needs to be sealed.

If you decide to seal it up with sealant on the inside. I'd use RTV instead of 4200 (I'm assuming you used 4200 on the outside). Too much 4200 and those tips will be a bear to remove in the future.

OK ZZ 28ZZ. That makes a lot of sense. There also has to be some condensation when you have cooler air meeting warmer air. Thanks again my brother. Helps a lot

Just use marine silicone. You'll never be able to remove the tips if you use 4200.

Totally agree. There's a dozen + types of sealers out there now with an application for every type of job and the right one will incorporate a good seal with 'take apart ability' down the road later.
People use 4200 and 5200 like it's the only stuff that's ever been invented and years later them , or some poor other sucka , has a nightmare on their hands.

Agreed. Sounds like the op had already used 4200 on the outside. I only use 4200/5200 if below water-line.
