Bad Azz!! I love me some huge garage / shop action.

How does it tie into the existing garage or layout of the house. I'm a little confused by the photos.

F-2 Speedy 03-04-2020 04:28 PM

the third car garage goes all the way through the house and has a door on both ends, thats the rear of the house

lucky strike 03-04-2020 04:30 PM

Sweet

AH!! Now I can see it.

So you can either drive around the side of the house to the shop or technically drive through the current garage to it?

That'll be awesome. Boat in the back yard tucked away nice and close. Easy access. Awesome. Reminds me of all the Havasu houses with more garage space than house space! LOVE IT!

Im in the county but still limited on how much sq. I can build, Im on 1.2 acres and it figured out to be 1198 sq ft so I built 1200...........24 x 50 with 14 ft walls, a 4 post lift and a future Class A motor coach is the reason for the 14 ft walls,

Ken, I’ll see about swinging over this weekend and help you drink a few beers in it. Gotta make sure you break this shop in correctly. Plus I need to check on your Camaro... sweet ride for sure.:evilb:

Looks good. Looking for a retirement home myself and the shop is the most important part--don't plan on spending all that much time in the house.

Looks like an awesome design! Exactly what I've been looking at doing.

Speedy, If you don't mind, send me some info about the contractor you're using. I'm in KC and have been looking around at options for Gun sized storage at my house.. Most contractors I've spoken to aren't interested in "small" garage projects or want to charge 100k+ for the structure...

Thanks!

Brandon

A friend of mine's dad wanted a much larger garage on his property in our town. He had a 1 car garage, probably built in the 50's. He drew up plans for a 6 car garage with a loft - twice the size of the small house that they lived in. City said NO WAY. So he went back home and thought about it a bit. Went back to the city and asked 'can I just add on to my existing garage?' City said 'sure'. He asked 'any restrictions to adding on?' City said 'no'.

He has one original corner post from that old single car garage - that is now a 6 car with a loft. LOL

Same with CA. Cant build a shelf in a closet without a permit and enviromental study. And a new property tax appraisal

ttuton 03-05-2020 04:36 PM

Congrats on the nice shop! As a carpenter I am always curious why other build walls and sheet them after they are up? I have always sheeted them laying down.

I also live in Illinois, but unincorporated unlike Dan. I’m on .45 acres and allowed 1800 sq ft of total garage space. I plan to build a 1300 sq ft shop this summer.

F-2 Speedy 03-05-2020 05:08 PM

five of us walked up all the walls including the 50's with no wall jacks or reach lifts, you cant do that if its sided.

I didn't have plans drawn up it was in my head, I'm out in the county so no inspections will be done, Id budget 30-40k depending on labor & material costs in your area.....I hired all my subs so I'm the GC, it would pass any inspection I used all 2x6 wall and truss framing with a 7/12 pitch

I guess some of my father rubbed off on me, he was a fabrication engineer and could make or build anything he set his mind to.
