Shootout Scandal

Powerboat digs a deeper hole...how dare BUD gets the cover...they must have sent a FAT check or something...any thoughts
|
Everyone knew it was going to Bud but I hope they gave Callan a decent write up as well.
Now, were the hell is my issue?? |
the problem....now the shootout will be all hydros...after all...nothing else can touch them...not even the 46 Callan boat....I know that this was covered before but the cover just came out
|
I thought I read a post here not long ago where the Callan boat hit 193? and they said by next years Shootout they will be able to go over 200. I think Bud will be busy this winter.
Cashmoney-Bud didn't send any money-they just bent the rules at the Shootout and entered the Bud boat after it was obvious the Bacardi Silver boat was getting beat by Callan. How would it look if they sponsored the event and their own boat was beat? Don't you love the crazy things that help make this world go round!!!! |

We're busy this winter...

Callan : ;)
|
Callan...you have a sweet boat and deserve the cover...lookin for ya next year
|
DAMN where is my copy!  ;)
|
I gotta believe the Callan with the rounded hull side/ deck joint with no rubrail should make the cover just for that!
Great people doing great things. |
What is the piston power speed record ? Offshore !
|
:D :D :D :D :D
|
Haven't got my copy yet either
|
steve 1: i think piston power ,offshore is around 190 by skater.. right?

Tim...the piston powered Bacardi boat drivin by Scott hit 165...the article is OK...but the mailbag section really shows the outrage and disappointment by the fans...and that is what matters...the fans...When chatting with the Bud guys they said they were there for a exhibition run only...the rest is history...here is the culprit..

And Scotts Bacardi boat...twin 1300 hp

Troutly,
Point well taken on accelleration. We learned alot last Shootout and are making improvements for next year. We didn't realize that the "start" would actually be a "flying" start at the Shootout. We had expected to start in the "box" like the rest of the boats. If that was the case, the hydro's accelleration couldn't come into play until she was on plane. I hope the rules next year promote a drag race on water rather than a flying mile format. A drag race on water is a unique event. If it continues with flying starts, I seriously hope they will re-evaluate the course layout for fan safety. dc |
Maybe I am missing something but I do not understand the outrage. It is true that Miss Bud was there for exhibition and decided to run for the record after the Callan boat outran the Bicardi boat but so what?
The Top Gun can be in any class. If you feel that it was unfair for Miss Bud to beat the Callan boat (a beautiful and truly incredible machine) then it was just as unfair to run a turbine boat like the Callan against a piston boat like the Bicardi (another beautiful and incredible machine) for the same title. I thought it was unbelievably awesome seeing that hydro go from a standing start to 190 MPH. I have seen the boat run several times before and it was way cool watching a 190MPH pass and then seeing that unbelievable turn at the end to make a return run, but it was not nearly as incredible as seeing the spray blowing up from the sponsons after the canard wing as it was climbing out of the water under full acceleration!! (or at least as much as the prop would hold) As a participant in that event many times I have always seen them let the big cats go past the flagboat on plane. I didn't mind as those boats are a little sluggish until they get some air under them and it made the big boats run quite a bit faster and break far fewer parts than a true drag race format would have. I did see that Miss Bud (probably fearing the backlash of an "unfair advantage") did not use the on plane start for her record runs and it really made for a great visual experience. As much as I would have hated to see that through a lens I wish I would have video taped it. Steve |
Shootout
Basically the Shootout has been ruined!. Turbine boats. Give me a break.. I have been to every Shootout since the first. All the commercial race boats should be restricted to exibition runs only or divided into two differnt top guns. The real top gun should go to the guys who are out there every day running their boats for pleasure. My .02

27mmLoto,
I don't think it's an issue that Miss Bud entered that everyone is upset about. It's the fact the she didn't decide to run in the Shootout until they realized the Bacardi boat had been beaten by Callan. I don't think all the explaining in the world is going to change many people's minds on this subject. Budweiser abused the situation hands down. Buck #183 |

I thought the "waterfowl" was going to get the cover. if i had a subscription i would cancel.

U3-Unlimited===> Piston Power

It would be very interesting to see if the Vacationville U3 Unlimited would consider running. It's running a WWII Allison and set the lap record of 160+ around a 2.5 mile course at the races in San Diego.

I havent seen my copy yet I hope they put a good picture of both of the Callen boats are very sweet. It was said the winner would be on the cover of Powerboat to much temptation for Bud to let that slip by. I to can remember the days when boats that ran LOTO won the two classes sounds like a good idea dont know how you could make it work.
|
There has always been a few retired raceboats running in the shootout. The first one I went to was 1990 and Dan Campbell ran the retired K.C. Aerospace boat and won. Then there was a series of true pleasure boats including a pleasure turbine boat that took the top gun honors. Even Bob Morgan ran a bunch of pleasure boats until the last few years. But the boat that raised the bar to a level where raceboats were needed was Dave Scotts first 36' Skater.
He was beating retired raceboats with that one and it was a true pleasure boat, I saw it out many weekends just cruising the lake. When he started running over 150 MPH I didn't blame him for wanting a canopy but that changed the compexion of the event. I think of the Callan boat as being on par with Howard Arnesons boat. It truly should be in a seperate catagory. I asked Howard once if he thought that turbines would ever be a good power plant for a pleasure boat and his reply as he looked at his boat was "I think they already are". In his mind that was a pleasure boat. To the rest of us it was an exhibition boat. I dont feel at all bad about Miss Bud winning. Unless you want to restrict it to boats that are running every weekend at the lake you are going to get people with real raceboats coming in to take the prize. The event has grown way beyond what it was in 1990. The Top Gun Honors are going to go to purpose built boats from now on. The rest of us will have to step up or be happy with class wins. Steve |
You're still missing the point. It's not the fact that Miss Bud entered and won the Top Gun honors. That's fine if they want to enter her in the race. It's the fact that they ran her ALL weekend with the intention of just exhibition runs and then put her in the competition after Bacardi got beat.
Buck #183 |
And I still do not understand your problem with that. They ran competition and exhibition and it was clearly stated which runs were for the title. As spectators we got the benifit of watching both.
Miss Bud won by the rules in place at the time of the competition. What else is there to understand? Steve |
I was at the shootout as well, and I agree that it wasn't that the Bud boat won, it was the fact that it wasn't entered until Saturday night! It seemed like a very suspect way of winning. Add that to the fact that the Bud boat had been there MANY times before and only run as an exhibition boat. What changed this year? Callan kicked some serious ass, that's what changed.
I think they deserve a big atta-boy for their efforts, as well as David Scott for his PISTON powered boat. He was awesome too. My opinion is have turbine classes, but the Top Gun should still be the fastest boat on the lake! If it is a race boat, so be it, just enter it BEFORE the race like everyone else. |

I agree...S.O. If the Bacardi boat was whipping everyones ass then the BUD boat would not have entered...kinda like their ace in the hole...Maybe this will bring on change...after all..who would have expeted Turbine boats to be so commen...?..and fast...sooner or later they have to look at the safety issues to...the boats will only be getting faster and faster...Classes would be a good Idea...not sure of the breakdown but their could be many class winners and still be a overall topgun award...it seems that their are only a handfull of contenders now...which forces alot of guys with nice boats to hang it up...look at Big Thunder....all of a sudden 4000 hp is not enough...a pic..
|
4000HP
4000hp might be enough, except Morgan says he needs more distance to get that big SOB up to speed. It takes a mile to get rolling, rules state that you have to start from the same place as every one else. I say lets open it up to run on a regular weekend with all the waves and see who can do what! After all we run in that stuff every week. Actually just kidding, it would be to dangerous to run in the LOTO rollers at full speed. Even though in the beginning of the Shootout they did not have it a no wake area.
|
I really do not see what all the tears are about !Long story short Here, The Piston Boat got beat by a Turbine Boat, so Bud ran their Turbine Boat What’s the big deal ??

A turbine powered converted european offshore race boat, a piston powered converted offshore race boat, a current turbine race boat. This was all about who is fastest. Those speeds are no longer pleasure boat stuff. It was Bud's show and the fastest boat took it home. If the Bud boat changed their minds later about exhibtion runs or trophy runs why should that matter? I say bring out the nitro drag boats and they will spot the other boats 3/4 mile as they only need 1/4 mile to hit 225 mph.

Sure ... the drag boats could idle for 3/4 mile and the show everybody what time it is.
|
nobody runs those drag boats at LOTO...for the shootout or otherwise....It would be a pisser for them to roll into town and take topgun then split...to never be seen running during the rest of the year....is this where they are heading....?
|
One little ripple or a small breeze and your picking up boat parts from the draggers for the rest of the day. Delaying the fun everyone else will have!
|
gdfatha: can you pls tell us more about that allison engine?
hp?-weight?tq? etc? |
Interesting debate.....I think this competition is all about bigger, faster, better. It probably always has been. It's just now the bigger and faster is an unlimited hydroplane and we don't see those regularly on the lake/river often(never). We have boats that sorta look like the Callan boat so we are on Callan's side. Check the rules and may the best boat win!!!

I have asked some people for spec sheets/description of the Allison. I will forward all info to you on this thread.
