Another boater bad day
This boat had 10 aboard when it sank near Traverse City. USCG helicopter rescue swimmer loaded all of them onto another boat. Water temperature around uppers 50's F. Now it sits appx. 250 below surface.

Any more details? Self induced bad day or did Poseidon decide it was it’s time?
|
Drain plug? Bellows?
|
For 250' that looks pretty damn bright

Our friends in "G Spot" a 45' Cruisers were first on scene and rescued the 10 people on board. We were close by anchored and swimming so when we heard "rescued" we almost laughed wondering why such a big deal. Well there were multiple elderly adults, one person paralyzed from the neck down, and an autistic child. The boat sank in under 9min.
There's coast guard video and multiple pics of the entire rescue on FB not sure the best way to post links. |
I heard shaft seals, but that is a fast leak for shaft seals. Unless someone repaired and forgot to tighten up the assemblies and it unscrewed. Doesn't appear to have outdrives by the way it sits.
|
i think its a V drive boat with the props up in pockets
|
The storage fee should be really low
|
|
Today's local newspaper said the boat is in 178 feet of water and state environmental agency states the boat must be removed !

Plus being freshwater you can just pull it up, change the oil, install new batteries and the boat will be ready for the season! :D

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...191414b84a.jpg That would be a nice snapper wreak in the gulf. |
9 mins would have to have been catastrophic.
Water temps would take out an older/unhealthy person in mins! |
Bad luck about the boat but extremely lucky good help was nearby. According to the article in the link, the VHF call may have saved the day. I don't always trust media reports but nonetheless, keep your VHF in good order and know how to operate it.
Stay safe RR |
The new VHF’s will communicate w/your GPS.
Push one button on the VHF and it broadcasts a “mayday” w/your latitude and longitude. All my boats have had that since it came out.

I would think you could send a drone down and hook up an air bag or cable to the radar arch and at least get it closer to the surface.
My arch on my SCARAB 34 was anchored down pretty well. |
Hope they have good insurance. That's going to be a big bill.
|
I believe that most insurance doesn't cover boat salvage. Might be a good time for everyone to read the fine print on their policies..
|
Don’t think we know what shot the picture do we?
Could have been a robotic sub. I will say that back in my wreck diving days, upper Mi/Canada/Great Lakes was known for water clarity due to its cold water (algae won’t grow) and deeper it is, better it is.

sure does . . . . i would say hundred fifty feet at most but that lake MI water is pretty damn clear so ya never know. The giveaway for me is the actual photo . . . 250 feet aint exactly a recreational dive

Boat was confirmed at 178 feet depth. Blue Eyes is a drone.

I hate it when bilge vents are mounted below the rub rail. Not saying it caused the sink, but doesn't help when it starts to go down.
+1 on outboard boats. |
