What's a respectable speed?

This is a pure opinion post.

What do you think is a respectable speed for an offshore boat?

What speed makes you "dash it"?

Is there a speed that, if you reach it, people talk about it?

What kind of speed in your local area makes you top dog?

Lucididee 11-11-2002 10:38 PM

It all depends on what you respect. If your on a lake or on the ocean. Are you topping out at 100mph, or are you crusing at 80mph on the snottiest stuff you've seen out on ocean?

Let's take Jet Set for example. Twin turbines. Hands down, fast. Very, very, very fast. Fastes in New Jersey. But what does he hit if he's out in the ocean?

About 5 mph more than your current top speed, at least this year! Actually it would be what is attainable within reasonable cost for your hull and safe. You could make a 21-ft. hull go 100+ but is it safe and or practical for the waters you boat in. On an inland lake why not? If the same hull was primarily used in an area with a lot of boat wake or a lot of chop then what’s the point? If you had a 32-foot twin that was used on protected bays and it would smash down 4 footers at WOT of 60 but you used it on an inland lake or calm area it would be a dog.

Say you ran a decent speed now, whatever that is. Many boats your size are not quite as fast or don't ride as well etc. Now you go plunk down 15k for engine mods. Well you can now beat them all, but was it worth it? Would you been better off to spend 5k and be faster than most? Always someone faster, not always someone wiser.

respectable speed

What's a respectable speed? (Post #1)

This is a pure opinion post.

What do you think is a respectable speed for an offshore boat?

I'm talking Deep V,

90 in a lake assuming it's calm
60-70 in the Ocean with 2-4 footers

What speed makes you "dash it"?
90 plus if by "dashing it" you mean wide open

Is there a speed that, if you reach it, people talk about it?
90 plus and it's gotta be on the recall GPS

What kind of speed in your local area makes you top dog?
90 - 95

Actually, all this is very subjective. At the end of the day your speed really depends on what you as a driver can safely handle and not endanger your self or other boaters.

Also 70 in my Cigarette and 70 in my Taylor Jet are two way different experiences.
One other thing is cruise speed. Most anyone can post a "big" number once. But I am much more impressed by the boats that can maintain a comfortable cruise speed. A steady 60-70 in the open ocean to me is much more indicative of good equipment and driver than a one time big number.

I am big on, be comfortable and don't boat for pure top end but instead for what is appropriate for the situations and just be safe.
Better to go slow and live to boat another day than to rush it and cause a mishap.
just my .02 cents

best

Its that speed where you are just scared enough to get the adrenaline pumping. It doesnt matter what size, type of boat or actual speed.

Biggus 11-12-2002 07:34 AM

There are not too many fast boats up here. If a boat is running 70 or over, it is one of the faster boats here. The fastest boat I`ve seen here is "Shakin" 37 quad step Limits. He is well over 110!

KAAMA 11-12-2002 08:22 AM

I pretty much agree with Timucin

I know hull technology is improving and speeds are increasing, but still my opinion for ANY location is:

70+ mph is a respectable speed

If you can hit 80mph you've attained a speed most don't see in a boat

Anything over 80mph is movin' along pretty darn good especially with some of the larger size boats. Wicked Won (41' Banshee Deep V) runs at about 106mph---that's flat GETTIN' IT! And Cat hulls just plain hall the mail!

Of course when I speak of MPH, I'm talking about TRUE MPH readings you get from a GPS or RADAR. Speedo's cannot be trusted---old technology anyway!

H2Xmark 11-12-2002 08:39 AM

I agree, 70 is respectable, that is a good speed for a V hull, anything over 80 is well a fast boat, and if you hit 90 in a V hull aroung here, people will talk about that boat, and top dog is 100

I think that 60+ is a real respectable speed if you are in the ocean. If you can hold it there. My boat with 330's I can run at WOT longer then some one with a radical motor can hold it WOT, SO it is like the tortois and the hair. Yes they are faster then me but in the end we both get there at roughly the same time.

What speed makes you "dash it"?

About 75+

Is there a speed that, if you reach it, people talk about it?

Around me about 75-80. Most people talk about the looks of the boats over the speed. This is probably because most people have NO idea how fast boats go. You know my bayliner goes 75mph ;)

What kind of speed in your local area makes you top dog?

As Biggus said that guy with the Outer Limits is basically top dog at WELL over 100mph. We have been increasingly gettting more and more fast boats in this area to include a couple real nice Apache's, Cigs, and Formula's.

I am sure that all these numbers will move with time. For example I am sure that at some time my boat way back in 79 when it was built was the ****. Now it is just another boat out there :D:D

Jon

26scarab 11-12-2002 11:11 AM

I think speed all depends on the size of the boat.
I mean 81 feels fast in my boat but in a 47 Apache it would be pretty boring.

What the hell does "dash it" mean ?

25-30ft V hull
80 is respectable

30-35ft V hull
90-95 is respectable

35-40 ft V hull
95-105 is respectable

40+ ft V hull
110 is respectable

Top dog speeds

25-30ft V hull
85-90

30-35 V hull
90-95

35-40 V hull
105

40+ V hull
123

Speeds that are talked about .... Well it seems that everyone that you talk in the bars around here has a 80-90 mph boat. Only the serious gearheads tell he truth.
For instance I raced a boat last year that I was told ran "well into the 80's, we had a hard time passing him" well I had my GPS on and paced the boat for a while , it ran 71. So speeds that get talked about is just that ...talk.

BAJA WILL 11-12-2002 12:06 PM

On Smith Mountain lake, 70 mph is good

75mph your up there, usually no one will pass you,

80mph your the chit, Some have faster boats but rarely see them out

Will:p

32 Fever,
Sorry , I guess I was the only one that didn't get it ! I'm a little slow sometimes:D

R Addiction 11-12-2002 12:51 PM

A respectable speed is 2-3 MPH faster than the guy you're running up against:D

Allan4 11-12-2002 01:32 PM

26scarab.....WOW!! 90 is only respectable for a 30 foot vee??!! Holy hell, we are all doomed....:D :D :D

I have always said that 80 kinda seperates the boys from the men, but as for respectable I think that 70 is respectable in a vee. I am just as impressed by engineering, driving and longevity as I am top end.

So, 80 is the seperation mark for vees, 100 for cats. But knock 10 mph off each to hit respectable, maybe more for cats,15-20. You gotta be able to drive 'em though

To be talked about, it's more a combination than just speed. I have a 75.7 gps 24 Outlaw that gets alot of remarks, but if one of the big cigs in town only goes 75.7, it would not draw attention for speed, but for other things that my boat would not....obviously....HeHeHe....ANd heck, my cat buddies cruise at 75.7!!!!

To be the fastest here in Cincy you better have an almost 100 vee and a 130+ cat. Cool toys here in Cincy, and quite a few of them. Not bad for a river town with a crappy football team.....:D :D

Okay, I should rethink that one. how's 85
sound ?:)

Keeping it together

I think keeping the boat together for 5 years, never having to touch the motors other than maintenance is respectable.

I think 70 mph is benchmark for V bottoms.

Speed is more impressive than respectable. I think 90 MPH in a pleasure V is impressive. Any faster is awesome.

26scarab 11-12-2002 03:28 PM

I think I just hang with the wrong crowd !

The slowest V out of my group of friends is 73 and the fastest is 118.:D

BryanTuvell 11-12-2002 04:08 PM

70 to 80 minimum, ocean, bay. HRPA reality. Yet not feel beat down the next day!
HRPA reality.

On flat/smooth water I think for our area 85 to 95.
I will let the RPBA guys answer this, their boats are much fastter than ours.

Bryan

WickedWon 11-12-2002 04:48 PM

WOW "26" HAS FAST FRIENDS!!

Before this thread gets any sillier, its time for a reality check. Rice Hauler's post was pretty damn accurate for the high end offshore world ( notice I said OFFSHORE, I've got a Flats boat that runs 60+ and I've been in a bass boat at 80+ ) Big offshore boats that can maintain 80+ mph are rare, but pushing one above 90 takes a ton more of everything and 100+ ,well its exponential, a pair of 1000hp drivelines cost well over $2000 dollars an hour to operate at those speeds. Don't let the magazine articles with BS #'s of "ringer" boats influence what you think is fast. 80mph in offshore conditions was and always will be DAMN FAST! JD

PS: How many 38ft + V boats are there on the Great Lakes that can maintain 100mph for more than a few miles? Maybe four or five and apparently you know most of them.;)

cigarette1 11-12-2002 04:54 PM

OFFSHOREONLY Baby !!!!

mopower 11-12-2002 05:03 PM

Back in the "OLD WEST" they didn't have offshore boats , but they still talked of "who was fastest".
Today , just like back then , there's always somebody faster:eek:
The more things change...the more they stay the same:D

Tonto 11-12-2002 05:13 PM

DAMN! $2000.00 per hour for 1000 hp drivelines. I sure am glad I only have 900's :p
Robert

eMotiondriver 11-12-2002 05:31 PM

I must be blessed. I love my lil' 30 Motion with lil' outboards cruise 70-80mph wot 100+ and then some. The best part that it'll run in 3-4's at this range and still comfortable. But I do miss my Scarab .

WickedWon 11-12-2002 05:41 PM

900's !!

Robert , what ever you do, DON"T START SAVING THE RECEIPTS !!
cause IGNORANCE IS BLISS!!

See Ya In Key West, JD :D

Clay Washington 11-12-2002 05:52 PM

I believe that 90% of the boats on the water are slower than 70mph.

So, anything over 70 mph puts you into the top 10%.

Just my humble opinion...

Tonto 11-12-2002 05:57 PM

I just got the BILL for checking the boat out for the Key West trip, now I don't think I can afford to go :(

Yeah but .... 90% of the boats on the water are not Offshore Boats

Airpacker 11-12-2002 06:59 PM

I think this line of questions asks more than can be answered so easily. Are we talking about fully loaded formulas or cover girl cabins, stripped out poker run boats? which? Show me an 80 mph v with a/c,a shower, central vac and a wet bar:) and I am pretty damned impressed. Now, take the same hull and make it a factory 2 boat and 80's not quite good enough anymore. It better see 90 these days it seems. The same hull in a "poker run edition" probably has big power and 100 would seem about right. I think that any V in its equivalent class that can truely run 80,90,100 or better is pretty dam fast. Considering that 95% of the offshore boats out there can't.

Respectable? 70 to 75.

Top dog? hundred plus.

Cats, hmmm, thats another whole pile of questions isn't it? Are we talking about a 48 foot expess cat or a 28 skater?

We have a 42 outerlimits around here with all that, corian counter tops and more that runs over 120. All ya need is a big pair of Sterlings.

kaama82 11-12-2002 07:18 PM

Having read all these posts, It seems the guys from the great state of Ohio, seem to know what there talking about. :D I've rode in Wicked Won's boat, the thing just plain rocks. The boat cruises faster then my is topped out. I think 75 is respectable in a Vee. As for 106 that just plain awesome!!!!!!!!!!. my 2 cents.

26scarab 11-12-2002 07:20 PM

JD, Airpacker,
You've made some good points. The 118mph V I mentioned(43 Scarab w/triple 1050's) , well when it's out , it is WOT from the moment it's in the water until they take it home BUT it's only out a couple of times a year.
My friends 31 Scarab is an old race boat(no cabin) and he runs it WFO (mid 90's)until he get's where he's going or it breaks . Unfortunatley he hasn't made is destinations too much lately.
Now his girlfriends 31 Scarab will run 79-80 all day long with a bunch of people and a full cooler and my boat will run 79-80 all day long also (as long as I change lifters once a season!) So I guess 70-75 is respectable and 80+ is badass.
Sound more realistic ?
:)

WETTE VETTE 11-12-2002 07:28 PM

I am here to speak for the mini-offshore boats here on OSO. A 20 to 24 foot vee hull at 70 MPH is gettin with it. 80 MPH puts you ahead of nearly everyone in this "class". At 95 plus a mini-offshore V hull will surprise the hell out of everyone, and you better wear your driving gloves to keep it going straight. As for top dog, there is always someone faster. Type of boat is must be considered when referring to how fast it is. 26 Scarab gave a pretty good explanation.;)
