Headsets
Who makes a good set of headsets for an open boat. Looking for 5 headsets. Thanks
|
Me too. Something affordable. Maybe I'd start with only two. Now we wear ear muffs for longer cruises and can't talk.

Comzilla - Mfr. Rep. 25 Years of Premier In-Vehicle Communications 928.208.3467 AZ Cell 909.376.3349 CA Cell www.comzilla.com [email protected] if this guy is still around then I highly recommend. Lake michigan pounding destroys amps and radios, Toms systems still working great 7 years later . Our systems are built to customer specifications by hand in small batches here in the US. The rugged system you are looking at is a mass produced item from China or Korea. The system you are looking at there is actually their least costly configuration with the headsets shown, so I don't think it would get much cheaper even with over the head headsets, but I could be wrong. With that said, it would be difficult for me to get our pricing under $1,000 for a complete system with headsets as you describe. Roughly, we would be in the $1,450 ballpark for one of our systems. Now for the justification. Besides being hand built in the USA, our systems are built to out live the vehicles they put in. We have been doing this for 30 plus years and many of our systems have been in use 15 years or more in specific off shore boats and off road trucks without issue. Internally we build our systems with two independent power supplies, where others do not. We hard wire all cabling off the board out of the box where others use plug in cables. Each cable has a connector with 4 solder joints per connector, per side. Adding in the 2 connectors and the 8 solder joints, you increase possible failures by 10 times. We do not use VOX at all. Our systems are live continuous. VOX needs to be adjusted based on the increased noise environment. At idle you set it at one level, at speed another, and so on. If you set it too tight, your first word can be clipped. If that first word is turn or stop, it could be costly. Besides becoming a pointless feature, I primarily mention the VOX topic as you say you want something simple. Simple is what we believe in. Once our intercom is mounted, it has power, cables are run, and headsets are plugged in, you are talking live continuous. Those are just some of the reasons our intercom is set apart from others. In regard to the headsets, we are all pretty much using the same ones. The only thing I do different from others is use a genuine military grade mic. Others are using copies of such a mic. If after reading this you would like a detailed quote, please let me know. By all means I would love to build you a system, but if budget is a concern, we might not be the right fit for your needs. I can say if you do have a system built by us, if it is taken care of, it is likely to provide you with many years of enjoyment. |
Sampson racing Headsets. Top of the line in my experience.

Is it a boat with lots of wind exposure to your face, or just an open boat?
I got these for the new MTI. Wireless, inexpensive, and they work fantastic. You can connect up to four at once and all can talk easily. If you are running with high wind exposure they may not stay on as well. They fit great but 70+ directly on them might push them back. About $230-250 ea depending on where you can find them available on the web. |
I too have had good luck with the Sampson Racing head sets. I have the Blue Tooth models and love how easy they are to use. No wiring etc. Put them on and turn on. I have had the for at least three seasons.

Her is link to the two set package.

I've often wondered about these and thought it would be nice to be able to communicate but I'm assuming they with block out the bulk of the engine noise and I'm not sure I could handle that. I keep a close ear on my babies.
|
Good info guys thanks as I have been looking for these too.
Although, I go out on the boat so I don't have to listen to anybody talk......:blahblah: |
I had Rugged Radios system in my Fountain. Worked well. Wired for comms and bluetooth for stereo. Just sold the system recently.

I'm not the OP but I am also looking for affordable headsets for next summer. My Donzi puts the wind directly in our faces unless I clamp on the deflectors. The muffs we wear stay on fine if we just put the band forward a bit, like across our foreheads more. Cash Bar, do you think we could push them forward and keep them on our heads at 80 mph or 70 mph cruise? The price is right! I will price out the Sampsons also.

They are reasonably narrow profile and fit well. They may stay on till 80. I wouldn't want to try 100+ in direct wind but I'd feel confident at your intended speeds. They are noise canceling and it's pretty solid.
|
Put a mike in the engine compartment. Pretty much once I get close to 80 all I can hear is wind noise and that's even with the mufflers off. I can barely keep my hair on at 80, I would need a chin strap to hold a headset that large on.
|
While we are on it. Any of you guys have a solution that fits inside a helmet? My kid races go-karts and looking for something I can talk to him on a walkie talkie and he has an earpiece.

Edit, I just looked and the same Brand Cash Bar has makes them for helmets as well. |

I have the David Clark system. If you're looking for something fully integrated, this is a good option.

The mic in the headsets make a big difference, I bought some extra headsets and they were muffled and all around sucked.. Returned those ordered another set thats was more expensive it they weren`t much better .
What ever mic my guy used is very good, very clear. As far as hearing the engines I can still hear mine , I monitor issue via gauges and warning lights. Once you "hear" an engine .. it`s too late anyway. headsets are great, I woudln`t have another boat without em... Unless you`re getting pounded like a whore on $2 night by Lake Michigan (skipping to 5:20 in the vid ):D |

Does this look like a good deal? Where do the cords plug into? Do they use batteries?

I'm trying to find something to order. These say that they require "1 Lithium Polymer batteries required. (included)." Does that mean that they are not rechargeable and i will have to install expensive new batteries with every outing?
|
Just pulled the trigger on two of them. Will add two more if they work well.

Does anyone have a solution for the 70+ market? I’m having trouble keeping my eyelids attached even with aerodynamic sunglasses at 80+. I can’t hear anything at that speed but wind noise. The only good part is I can’t hear my wife telling me to slow down.

i use skull candy noise canceling over the ear from walmart i really like them we also use googles from amazon with either the blue mirror or red gold mirror or clear we ordered a bunch of different ones they go over the head phones to keep them on at higher speeds its the wind noise that hurts my ears
|
Im not sure if I will like headsets, so I am experimenting this season. bought a used port. aviation vox intercom off ebay as well as a pair of headsets... in for under 200 to see if I like it. the intercom does have input for music as well.
|
I'm with phragle. Purchased a bunch of used aviation stuff fairly cheap and I'm gonna wire in a custom system with 6 locations and ability to talk on VHF and pump in sound from the head unit. With 4 headsets (used) wiring and intercom boxes I'm in about $300 so far. Too cold here to start my project. Have been accumulating equipment over winter for a bunch of different projects.

We use Firecom system on our airboat at work. What you want is any headset that has full duplex with bluetooth. That allows you to talk direct to each other and can sync to any bluetooth stereo or your phone. Sonetics has commercial applications and are pricey but they also make a headset that has stereo mics that allow you to hear ambient noises that get cut off at a certain decibel level. I use a set like that made by 3M and are great for cutting off loud noises like gunshots, explosions, etc...

I got my two SENAs and they seem pretty good. As long as the mic doesn't get too much wind noise they should work good. Looking forward to trying them on the big water. I found a plastic box deep enough to hold four of them if I add two more. I have no intention of running music or phone through them. There is no sweeter music than the 525 EFI makes.
