Should have bought a CHEVY. :D
I have a 93 6.5 TD - 4:10 ratio, 4x4 long box ext. cab. I get 17 mpg at 75 MPH no load and 11 1/4 pulling 13000 to 14000 lbs.
Is it worth buying a diesel?? depends on the use. How big the boat is and how much you like getting passed by the guy with the diesel pulling the BAYLINER up the big hill. :D :D :D

I have an '02 Excursion with PS. Upgraded with a Superchips 70 Hp program and it's hard to beleive the difference. I tow a 42' boat that weighs 15-16 thousand pounds and get an avg. of 15.1 mpg towing! (made two 2200 mile trips towing this year) When not towing I'm getting 25 mpg highway, if I keep it under 65. Around town I'm getting 18.

Can't beat the room and people hauling...I can carry 7 people comfortably and have room for everybody's luggage in the back.

Gotta be careful at stop lights...you can smoke some rubber in a hearbeat

My oil changes are $40 at local full service drive-thru.

Look at used and save thousands...

Quote> Problem is I don't think it's going to save me any money in the long run (or short run). As the payment is $150 more per month than mine. And the maintenance costs more.

So buy a used truck. I priced the new ones and could get a new Duramax/Allison for $29k. Found a cherry '97 F250 SuperCab LB 4x4 with 86k miles with PSD and 5 speed manual and 4.10 LS SRW for $18K. Now I get all the diesel features and saved a pile of $$. Absolutely LOVE the diesel and will never go back to gas!!! It's my daily driver too. 15-16 mpg in town. 12.5 towing with stock motor. She will be getting a few upgrades for more power and mileage. Ok, just for more power... it's addictive!

Go to www.thedieselstop.com for the inside scoop on Fords. It's the OSO of Ford Trucks.

I've had two V-10 powered Ford pickups- a '99 F250 CC 4x4 SWB, and a 2000 F350 dually CC 4x4 SWB. I love the engine's smoothness, and it seemed adequate on towing power, but seemed to shift a lot in the hills. The gas mileage, however, was pathetic. I don't know where some people get there numbers- I think they just like to tell themselves they are getting better mileage than they are to justify owning it. I never saw better than 11.9 with the F250, and the F350 never broke into double digits on mpg.
I now have a 2000 Excursion Limited PSD. I never put a damn thing in the bed of either of those trucks, so this makes more sense. I have seen as high as 21.9 mpg with it, and it hits the scales at 8215 lbs. (heavier than the dually). Towing the AT back from FL, I got 15.5, and I drove 65+ the whole way. I actually drove the trip to our place in Canada (735 miles) without getting fuel, and still had reserve when I got there.
If you tow or travel with your vehicle quite a bit, you will never be sorry about getting one. I agree...... buy slightly used and save big $$$

The 02 F-350 dually im looking at is used. Has 41k miles on it and is in nearly perfect shape.

I wish I could find a crew cab Duramax/Allison for around $30k. I've been looking and havn't seen one less than $36k that's not beat to hell.

Check-if you're looking for milage. Get a precomputer Dodge. I'm getting 22 empty and 18 towing with a 5spd manual. My engine is also turned up to 300hp and the power is really incredible. A couple other board members also have the older diesel and they're reporting simular numbers with the automatic.

03 F350 FX4 Crew Cab Short Box Lariat PSD, 3.73 rear end, a 4" lift with 35" tires
I have 3200 miles and I already get 17+mpg on the hwy. Around town I get 14.
The oil changes dont cost $80 around $40 is more like it. I do my own however the shop near me does it for $50 and they wash and vac for free with oil change.
I have a couple of friends with the Duramax/alis combo and they have several engine troubles, dies at stoplights and will not start, no power, smokes alot. They dont get very good millage, they have not got better than 14mpg.

I got sick of wearing out gas motors in less than 100,000 miles. At least with the PSD you can get more than a few years of service. I also get my fuel filters at local NAPA store. I think their less than $30. The canister is right on top under the plastic cover. Takes 2 minutes to change.
