Larger boats built by a standard builder?

I've often wondered how a typical performance boat builder can justify the costs of hull development and mold building for larger models than are typical of their lineup.
For example I'll use Nordic as I own one and am familiar with them. Their bread and butter are boats from 21-35' in length. Yet, they have 42, 47, and 48' V hulls also. You don't see many of these being built at all compared to their typical smaller craft. So, did they take the time/expense to develop/test these larger hulls or did they get a mold from another manufacturer? I'd think you'd almost have to get a proven mold from another manufacturer to make this pencil out.
I'm not specifically asking about Nordic, as I see other manufacturers offering the same. Anyone know?
