Default Best WOT RPM

Looking for feedback on best WOT RPM setting for new programming for Whipple Supercharger.I’ve read all the “don’t do it, but I’m attached to boat (26 Outlaw) and motor. Brad at RPM Performace is doing all the upgrades we think are necessary. Clearances, forged internals, some heading porting and cleanup, HD springs, roller rockers, HD pump, etc. Already running CMI headers.Whipple base setting is 5450. Going with Hydamotive Quad 4. Tom suggested 5600. Whipple doesn’t see an issue but didn’t have opinion. Waiting on dyno numbers for final prop size and and DriveGuardian calibration. Looking for opinions and feedback.

The dyno will tell you all you need to know. No sense in guessing till dyno'd. It will give you peak HP and TQ. No sense running it past peak HP.
Is this a 283 or 572? Pretty vague on the specs.

Duh. Thought I said 496 HO. My bad. Have to pick something to start with on the ECU program. Trying not to go back and forth with Whipple on the limiter, Dyno time $.

you could dyno it without a limiter and then have whipple add it in after you see where peak power is.

That’s an idea. Just wondering about the pros and cons. i.e. does the higher RPM have no benefit when it comes to power curve? I think I was told 5600 would be easier on the drive, but don’t really understand how all that works together. Is the Rev limit merely a factor of what the motor can handle, thus build it tougher and get more out of the higher limiter? Whipple has an out of the box setup for the stock 496 HO, but I want to maximize output considering the internal upgrades we are doing.

Is the rev limit merely a function of where peak power falls off, but also factoring in an issue off reliability. Would it be fair to say you might still be making power but don’t think it’s RPM level the motor could sustain?

A rev limiter is an arbitrary number you make up after a dyno session so it doesn't over rev. If the engine makes peak power at 5500 prop the boat to 5300 fueled 5500 light speed runs and set the rev limiter to 6000. Your prop should be your rev limiter. Between 5500-6000 is not going to hurt the engine if built properly. The rev limiter helps it not to go to 8000 when you miss a throttle.

I don’t know how 5600 rpm would be easier on the drive. Merc has been pretty consistent with their bravo boats to keep the rpm between 5-5,200.

Another issue with higher rpm is stern lift which your Baja won’t like. Also I’ve always had better luck and speed with the bravo props on them over hydromotives.

I’ve heard some of the same on the Bravo props. I’m currently turning a 24P Bravo one. WOT is right at 5150. Motor was stock except for installed CMI’s. I am still open to prop options. Looking to make to most of the build.
