Fast small hulls
I have a badass 502 sitting in my garage that I’m looking to drop in a fast hull, I’m gonna use this boat mainly for poker runs, and ripping around, not concerned with radios or cup holders
If I could pick I’d find a 24 progression LD ex race boat. But progressions arnt easy boats to find as it is any other fast 24’ ish hulls out there, love to find an ex race boat that’s still in decent shape |
A tad smaller but a 22 Velocity would do what you want. There was one without power and drive in the classifieds.

There is a 28' twin step Donzi bare hull in the swap shop. No idea on performance though

We built what you are thinking of doing we used an 24 or 25 active thunder hull that was like new used a hi performance xr transome a bravo XR 380 tabs and close to 800 hp natural aspirated we use a 26p bravo prop and run it deep the hull has no steps its the most fun turn key does not break can carry 8 people and get on plane it really winds out up to 6800 on a very cool day. when we built the engine we killed the low end torque and put it on top like a truck puller....its just the most fun bang for your buck i have ever been involved with it runs into the 90s we call it thunder therapy and it sure is after a long week.... enjoy your build! and yes we could go faster but you start to lose driveability as you raise the drive and get into custom props it ended up being driver ed to teach my son how to drive fast in all conditions as we are restoring an 388 with big power but not so forgiving to learn on......just to show how old school i am we have never left the dock with out every one wearing a life vest! you can build a simple reliable fun predictable boat just think it out....you are welcome to come for a ride if you are in the lake ontario area

I definitely like those boats, I don’t have actual experience with a 24/7 boat but I’ve Hurd they are a handful above 90

I have a little 25' cat with IMCO drive, hydraulic steering, big tube headers, etc. that I would let go of pretty cheap.

27 Fountain is about 24' lol
Sorry. I know I deserve any heat I get for that shot, but I have an almost pavlovian compulsion to swing at stuff going slow over the middle of the plate. +1 RE Tuff Boats, they're badass, but I'm thinking you're looking for an older boat to re-power ? There's a few still around & If you could find one, Challenger Boats out of MI made a pretty cool 24 which ran well.. Personally, I think I'd lean toward some sort of air entrapment boat ...there's a Talon I/O by me that runs good & I've always loved the old classic Eliminator Daytona hulls like their 23'..... I think Stoker made a cool I/O but it might be only 22'. If you're not into air entrapment, don't forget west coast stuff - Laveycraft, Hallett, Nordic, etc ...I think Warlock made a 24ish V as well...my perception is they're all a "smaller water go fast hull" The real trick right now is finding a used hull the owner doesn't think a bag of gold is hidden in. Good luck |

Must be newer people. The fountain length shortcomings and fountain skank comments ran rampant around here, even by fountain owners. It was funny stuff by all.
Either way, watching someone get triggered is funny too. Lol. |

OP a 27 Activator would be a rocket, they are pretty “small” 27’s with their narrow beam 7’6” I believe. If you were able to find a twin step model you’d be flying. They’ve been mid 80’s with a 525 in those. |

I won't tell the story, but it's out there, of an owner who was so insensitive when class rules were changed he applied a sawzall to a nearly new fountain to get his OAL within limits. FWIW I'm a fan, I love what RF did for both the industry and the sport, and the beak and platform were genius from both a marketing standpoint AND for insurance purposes RE HP per length calculations. 3 - I can afford one, left hand sticks don't work for me. And 200 ? No. Not 200. 4 - Seriously, I don't want to turn this into a pissing contest and it wasn't my intent to hurt anyone's feelings. If I ever bring one of the boats to NY the first round is on me by way of apology. s |
I just have to correct Slippery's sig line. He states that: There are 2 types of people in this world:
1. Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data. Truth be told, there are three types of people in this world. Those that can count and those that cannot. |
A good choice might be a Michael Peters' designed Maelstrom 23. A couple per year usually come up for sale. In other words, they are rare, but not impossible to find.
One is for sale in Lake Havasu now and that's kind of far to go for you, but if you stuck your motor in that you'd see triple digits. They're famous for providing a stable ride and handle chop well. Length almost 24' and a wide 8'6" beam. 1990 23? Maelstrom Closed Bow ? The Boat Brokers https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...171901f83b.jpg |
Spyder V24 from Germany |
Just thinking out loud, but the ski race crowd stuffs big power in relatively small hulls and they go ridiculously fast pulling a pair of skiers. (check out the Bridge to Bridge race if you really want to fall down a rabbit hole)
Think 1350 hp in front of a 6 drive - or 2 - in a 7.14 meter boat @ 120 mph We've already established that boat length is fairly open to interpretation lol but I believe due to class requirements I'm guessing they get as much done in a small hull as anyone while handling the power and being controllable. If you could find one of those hulls from someone changing class or retiring ? You'd have something unique and may have a boat with "real" race history. I'd think a healthy 502 would push one of those hulls well enough to blow your hair back. I don't know all the hulls, but Bernico is a big player and is nearly 24', and Nordic in CA makes a 21 Cyclone (which is smaller than you want) but has no platform and a short deck meaning - without throwing any rocks or bruising any egos - your real running surface might be comparable to a "larger" boat with a built in platform and more deck. cheers |

Went off for no good reason, for so long on here Fountains have been bashed for any and every reason known to man. Hell some hate the boats cause Reggie used hair dye. I have owned two over a period of 16+ years and have never suffered from all the problems claimed to be so common to the brand. I'm a Reggie fan to the core, love the look, love the Beak / and there is a reason for it's design not at all related to go fast chit . I love my boat, and though I do not use it as much as in years past I just do not seem to find a boat that I would replace it with. Frosted Mini Wheats are the cereal of choice here. :-} |
