29'-35' we can overnight on? Long time member returning!
Wow its been a LONG time. I was a pretty active member here 25 years ago.
After a long break from this type of boating we are thinking of getting into something sporty with a cuddy and the ability to put a camper top on for weekend overnights. We moved to Florida 20 years ago and its been all outboard CC's since. Looking for suggestions and comfort takes a priority over outright performance. So far I am thinking along the lines of a 35 Formula Fastech. I have a large garage and can fit a 38 but a 29-35 would work better with the other toys. Even the 29 Formula might be a good starting point to see if we stick with this. AC or the ability to add AC is a must. Just looked at the Donzi 33ZX in the classifieds here. Def something to consider. We used to do this in Illinois and Michigan with a 26 Four Winns Liberator and had a blast but I need more comfort at 56 years old! Some of you might know me from this boat. Its the fastest 4 cylinder boat in the country. Pic for attention https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...154c8de620.png |

Welcome back!!!

358 Sonic. The cabin is massive and comfortable.

2 good suggestions!
welcome back! |
The 33ZX Donzi or a Powerquest 340 Vyper or 300 Revenge would fit the bill if weekending is the goal. Both have far more headroom in cabins than the Formulas. Buddy of mine has a 33ZX and that thing is a roomy tank yet runs 78 with 500 efi's. The Powerquest's will run real good numbers with stock power too. Formula is a great boat, to me the deck isn't tall enough for much headroom in cabin for comfortable weekending unless you like crawling around or bent 90* at the waist all the time.
|
358 Sonic is identical from the steering wheel forward to the 386 Sonic. But the 358 Sonic does have some native porpoise due to how the hull was dammed in to make the shorter boat. You can tune it out with props and tabs.
34' Hustler Cheetah 38' 388 Hustler Slingshot 33' Active Thunder 37' Active Thunder All good options to consider. |

Welcome back. For a 29ft boat I like the Velocity SC for your purpose. I've seen many with A/C and even saw one with a generator and A/C. Since you like center consoles you might consider a 33 Ocean Hawk as well, one of the largest cabins in it's class, but still trailerable.

Thanks for the suggestions. Much appreciated. Some mentioned I completely forgot about like Powequest.

We have a Donzi 33zx and really like it; the cabin headroom is really not bad and I am 6'2" -- we enjoy overnighting with two adults and two kids. We looked at a Powerquest 340 also ... it felt a little bigger in some areas but the bathroom was considerably more cramped than the Donzi fwiw. On the other hand, camper tops seem pretty common with the Powerquests and more 'custom' with the Donzi ... this is anecdotal only -- YMMV
Good Luck with the search |
Welcome back! If you’re looking for overnighting space over performance with a camper canvas I would’nt rule out Baja’s 342 or 38 Special. Very spacious and a lot bang for your buck.
|
This looks nice and def in the budget. Maybe something I could get into and see if we really want to go this route.

Buy the PQ from GSC, looks super clean and exactly what you’re looking for. Holy moly do they take a lot of pics, love it!
|
The Powerquest and this Donzi fit the bill pretty well. Both would need AC, Closed cooling, and the PQ would need an aluminum trailer. Steel wont last long here in the salt.

Don’t look at the Donzi ZR’s. I owned the 35 and the 38. The 38 has no head room and when sitting on the benches in the cabin my head hit the ceiling and I had to sit scrunched down a bit to keep from hitting (I’m 6’1”). The 35 benches were lower and my head didn’t hit the ceiling. Don’t know why they designed them differently. If you lay in the bed you will be laying in a large coffin. From mattress to ceiling is around 2.5’ tall. Good luck on the search.
|
In for suggestions as well. In my opinion a lot will depend on how big you are and how many people you plan to regularly accompany you. I'm 6'1" 260 and prefer an enclosed head you can stand up in. If you are smaller or are ok with less room it opens up your options.
|
The Donzi ZR head area is pretty small but ok. You can’t stand up in it what so ever. I looked at a Donzi 30 footer one time and there was lots of room in cabin and those boats are very nice on the pocket book compared to other high performance boats.
|
Donzi 33ZX. The boat has a huge cabin and cockpit for its size. Easy to overnight and still run good speeds.
|
Ditto on the Velocity 290. Looks like there is one in the classifi, not mine. Very roomy cabin and deep cockpit for a 29.

We chartered an Axopar in Turks and Caicos right before the World shut down. It was the open. I was Very impressed with the layout and it still had a very decent cabin below. There were 8 of us plus the captain and his first mate. We were very comfortable for the 8+ hours we were aboard.
I have been looking at them myself- just still not sure about the plumb bow look. Seems very reasonably priced too. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...14111a49c1.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...536847c10e.jpg |

I love the condition and price of this Vyper Chris. Even if mainly being used for cruising and camping, well then driveability is still imperative. I will scratch my head a little bit and see what suggestions I'll be able to come up with. Catching a Great Lakes boat before the winter and pull down to Florida would be ideal. Florida seems to have been going boating crazy and hurricanes have also taken their toll on nice 10-20-year-old boats. I guess that's what inflated resale values and to top it off the new boats are extremely pricey due to manufacturing costs and strong demand. What is the widest beam you think would work for you? 'till I got some suggestions... |
Out of all these and something you may find for sale I would say 35 Sonic or 33 DONZI ZX. Both have a bunch of cabin room, I think the DONZI is a wider beam.

Join this group on Facebook, and post that you are looking for an Active Thunder. There are going to be some that can be bought but aren’t listed:

OK Chris, I'm pitching a Cobalt 343. Saw a one-owner mint looking one at the Great Lakes for about $80k. The beam is wide enough to give some decent room in the cabin for a couple
and the model was designed for a genset if customers so desired. A gentleman's sportsboat in the tradition of Fino 30 or larger Riva runabouts. I find the design timeless, build- quality was high and they were built to handle rough sea. A crossing to Bahamas, with the 24.5 degrees at transom, should vouch for a comfortable trip. Been busy and haven't checked back but...
have a deposit on a boat. I'm not going to jinx it lol Waiting on Survey. |
I have a 2000 33 zx with 500 efis that has 2 beds microwave cook top sink and fridge. Bathroom with pull out shower sunk and pump out porta potty transom shower heat and air. Have it listed to sell just not here willing to consider any offers

|
Also check out a Powerquest 34 Viper. It would fit the build and fit in your garage.

The deal is done.
Bought a 32 Sunsation Dominator. Cabin is a little smaller than I wanted but it checked a whole lot of other boxes. Im in FL and it has closed cooling sitting on a triple axle aluminum trailer and was a fresh water boat. Its plumbed for AC and most importantly, my wife thinks its "pretty" Were going to spend the winter down here seeing if this is what we really want and we can always make a change of needed. Thanks for your https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d103a25c61.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bd90e51bb2.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...dbbcb39409.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...3b754fcb4c.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0a2a168d97.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...dd4035d33d.jpg input. |
Congratulations.
Looks like she has been loved, exactly what you want when buying a second hand boat. 👍 RR |
I really like Your choice. These later 32 Dominator hulls got perfected and this is a fun driver's boat that's also solid. This one looks to be in Bristol condition and has plenty of options too.
The graphics have not aged and the upgraded bolsters/bench look fantastic. Congrats! |
Nice boat! I was looking at that boat. Congrats!
