One of the news reports showed the front/outside of the sponson was damaged from a sideswipe type hit. It was high up off the water so likely a piling/channel market. Guy was running the boat in the dark so he likely didn't see it until it was too late. Total speculation on my part but that is what it looks like to me.

Guy built a sharp looking boat!
