What's on the winter upgrade list?

Since boating season is over for most of us, what all is on the upgrade list this winter for everyone? My winter upgrade list is all finished after a long year and just waiting on the final installs to be done when Mr Young's shoulder heals up.

ThisIsLivin 12-07-2021 06:18 AM

I'm looking at a top end tear down and inspection. After reading through a thread on lifter failure, I decided not to wait for the engine to tell me it's broke. I will probably be switching to solid lifters and I might be switching to 1.8 rockers as well. Hopefully that's all I have to do. Last year I gutted the cabin and put in new headliner and side fabric along with completely redoing the speakers, wiring and lighting.

abones 12-07-2021 09:08 AM

Not to derail your thread, but what happened to Eddie?

My winter upgrades will be bigger oil coolers (all 4) and fresh water pump impellers on the 3 stage pumps

halfgassed 12-07-2021 03:41 PM

Mya not be a boat upgrade, but finishing my garage addition that yields enough space for my fountain to have its own segregated clean storage! Keep all the grinding dust and general shop dirt off her! If that happens soon enough hopefully I’ll have enough time to put hydraulic steering on her before summer.

He had shoulder surgery about 4 1/2 weeks ago and is healing up very good according to him. I think the physical therapy is giving him a good work over he's not used to. I told him its old age finally catching up to him, lol.

I'd call that a upgrade since it has something to do with the boat.

You should check out the post on FB that Eddie Young and Jeff Harris had going a few days ago on Eddie's Young Performance Marine page about some lifter failure. It got really nasty looking on some.

My last winter/ all this year upgrades are on the final stages now. Water pickups are going in now.

What hull are you working on? Trying to figure out are your water pickups going next to trim tabs?

33 AT hull. He wanted to mount them right there at the strake instead between the drives, so no interference with the water in front of the props. The picture makes them look really high up, but they actually aren't. He knows way more than I do when it comes to that stuff, since he does quite a few whipple installs every year.

OFFSHOREJOJO 12-07-2021 07:53 PM

Props sea strainers impellers canvas maybe Imco steering?

Gboat 12-07-2021 08:12 PM

Definitely getting bigger oil coolers.

xlint89 12-07-2021 08:16 PM

New block. :(

Cms51 12-07-2021 08:17 PM

I dont even know where to start. All 3 motors getting freshened. New cams ,lifters valvetrains, figured since i lost 1 motors lifter the other 2 arnt far behind. Bottom ends getting rings ,bearings, oil pumps and timing sets. There dart tall decks pro1 heads and 8-71's. Also upgraded all 3 motors efi to the new holley super sniper dual quad setups pretty excited to see how that goes. As for hull,15" garmin next to a 12" garmin. Getting rid of all the gauges to modernize the dash. All 3 xrs getting checked out hopefully not much wear and just a seal job. But really debating on selling them and going imco scx. Thoughts?

ICDEDPPL 12-07-2021 09:23 PM

Well since almost every part I need is 12-14 weeks out might as well call boating season 2022 a bust.
It`ll be a miracle if I get anything done.

LET`S GO BRANDON!!!

And that's how my project started last year.. All of a sudden I had a hull with only wiring left in it.. I had my Xr's gone through and then sold them after deciding I had better go to SCX's after changing my mind and adding the new 3.8 whipples. I also added drive guardians for some extra insurance.

the deep 12-08-2021 12:27 AM

Got the floor finished up, just the tank mounts left to cut out and glass in. Removed the fugly paint from the tanks and polished them, not quite where I want them yet. Early spring hope to get the power in and fired.

How much power are you putting threw the scxs?

scarabman 12-08-2021 10:08 AM

Sell the cruiser and buy another performance boat:picard1:

Second winter in a row engines are staying in the boat ....:drink:..... but I have some new props to test come spring time...........now if I could only get this Vette to run....:faint2:

We are going to stay in the 850 range on these for now. I believe once you get close to 900hp the factory cooling needs to be upgraded.

I think you'll be pleased with those props, that you have for testing. I finally got my herings and maximus props ready for some testing very soon. I've been around Vettes all my life and if I were closer I'd come by to give you a hand.

Some fuel tank winter upgrades finished today. Factory pickups vs custom pickups for added fuel flow to feed the SC's.

I'm thinking about sanding and polishing the inside of my BDS scoop for max airflow. Anyone know where I could get a nice clean looking screen/flame arrestor made to mount in there? I chose to run this setup because of the heavy mist that comes up the transom so as to keep it out of the rear carb. Old school but cool.

I got the cockpit canvas replaced already, sending the prop out to be touched up, new cockpit speakers add two more , a sub and an amp, replace the drive hub i blew the last trip out and add a mount for the spare tire on the trailer

dykstra 12-10-2021 06:44 AM

I’m having a new cockpit cover made.

IGetWet 12-12-2021 06:36 AM

I’ve been avoiding posting on his thread cause it might make me sick...

Replace the lighter blue panels probably with carbon fiber panels since I redid the interior last winter a much darker blue. Move garmin 7” from helm to passenger side.
Add new 9” garmin to helm which requires sliding the gauges outwards a bit
Replace toggle switches with blue water push button switches you can actually see at night
New stereo head unit in cabin and remote at helm
New amp that actually works
Replace 6.5” speakers in cabin with speakers that actually work.
Pulled apart throttle/shifter to rebuild/regrease. Old grease was very hard.
Either fasten down existing floor in cabin or cut out and replace. Haven’t decided which way yet. Loose in one spot and when you step on it right you can hear the clunk from being loose.
Rebuild step down into cabin to remove vent for AC that’s been removed.
Replace cabin floor carpet with marine mat or similar.
Finish new white and blue lights in cabin.
Finish wiring LED speakers
Finish wiring Drive sync for presets
Finish wiring LED cup holders
Clean up wiring to Simrads in bolsters a bit
As of yesterday, pull all polished or chrome parts, except steering wheel, and have them powder coated black or charcoal.
Valve lash and other less important things, lol

4 new indicator Cables
New AC ( if I can ever get it shipped)
New headliner (if someone will come do it)
New water pump mounts
Might play with the adjustable timing a little and see if I can get the idle down a bit and get them leaned out a touch.

All the easy stuff has already been done last weekend - oil, filter, drive lube, plugs.

New water pump and thermostats for the little 16' Donzi.....

87MirageIntruder 12-15-2021 10:44 AM

I'm installing a larger oil cooler, and my bravo drive is over getting rebuilt by Dick Tryce (everything was worn out).

TexomaPowerboater 12-15-2021 11:11 AM

Not enough time to enjoy enough boating these days so the pool and patio is getting remodeled.

tmmii 12-16-2021 01:28 AM

Good thread to read, looks like a lot of stuff to hopefully get done!

My list includes looking at a building to store some of my toys in, hoping to get there Saturday. All depending on the realtor and schedule.

On my fountain pull engine, toss the Holley efi system, have new bearings put in, buff, possibly put in a new dash so I can get it listed in the spring.

Scarab get new motors to the shop, order scx, build the sc shortly lowers, get interior over to upholstery shop around the first of the year, lord knows what else will come up.

Cruiser get the new gimbal ring on and buff out, add some egregious name and start lining up the strippers hopefully only get to take that one out once or twice before it’s sold and gone.

Baja parts boat - well get parts off of it and list them up lol.

And in the background knowing I’m going to build another Baja next winter so starting to stockpile crap for that build. Thank god I’m not married, don’t know how I could justify a Procharger sitting in my kitchen and a shorty lower sitting next to one of the chaise lounges in my family room to a girl.

Not sure of your plans on the SC lower, but I would suggest having a SCX vertical shaft installed so you can use spacers if ever needed and the 1 7/16 prop shaft for added prop choices. IMCO has a hub adapter to slide over the 1 7/16 that you can use for bravo prop use. Just thought I would suggest a few things to maybe help you out in the long run. Good luck with the build.

If you are going to toss them, I'll pay the shipping to get them here !! LOL

DallasBAJA 12-16-2021 07:53 AM

1. fix some gel coat on the bottom of the fountain.
2. install trans cooler on the truck to help with temps during the summertime.
3. full service on the 525 efi to get her ready for next spring!

offshoredrillin 12-16-2021 08:00 AM

after all the years of redoing the Tiger, i don't have anything left to do. Had to do top-ends last year due to a surprise aluminum head rot, so now everything on the boat has been totally redone and its 100%. it winterized and coming back to the house this wknd... Its also for sale at 325k or best offer, dont need or want to sell, but I found something bigger I want and if I can make it work I will.
