Older straight bottom 33 with only twin 300's, I would expect it to be somewhat sluggish.
Is that 51 mph or 51 nautical mph (58.5mph)??

Actually 51 with 300s sounds about right, maybe a few mph faster than what I would have guessed

Hello everyone this is my first post here even though I have been lurking around on this forum for a while searching for informations.
I am From a French Caribbean island and boat like the one I will be talking about are rare around here.
Recently an Avanti 33 (cigarette type not the CC) has been listed for sale with twin 300 verados.
I have very little information on the boat and I'm actually confused from where it actually comes from. I know there were 2 Avanti builders one in NJ and one in FL.
I tried the boat and found it to be very sluggish (51mph WOT) and was wondering if it was normal ? The boat rode very well though and was very planted (Guy told me it weighted around 4 tons ?) I have seen people saying theirs were running faster with smaller engines, but I was planning to replace the double 300 with 350s anyway. What kind of speed can I expect with new mercury props ?
I have seen people saying that before 2000 the boats were built with wood stringers, the one I'm looking at is from 1997, is this something I have to worry about ?
What other problems are well known on these boats ?
I can't post any picture due to the fact I'm new. I can send them in PM if people are willing to help !
Thank you very much in advance.

I would expect it to run about 60.

The props are way off, the boat is way overweight, or the engines aren’t healthy.

How many RPMs was it running at 51mph?

Good point on nautical miles, that would be a number I’d expect.

I can tell you with certainty, that the Dennis Friedman owned NJ built 33s were known to have a pretty substantial hook in the bottom. Not sure what Egg Harbor Yachts did after they purchased the company. Obviously I dont know if that is the case with yours or not, but might be worth checking. I have seen a few have work done to them to remove said hook.

Nice boat. Basically the same hull as my old 32 spectra. Awesome cruising and rough water boat. V all the way to the transom!!! I think mine was about 6,800 pounds and ran about 65-67 with worn out I/O 330’s. That’s a perfect size IMO.

We were running 45.2 knots/nautical MPH aka 51MPH at 5500 RPM I was expecting it to go at least 50 knots/nautical MPH aka 57-58 mph. Engines conditions are not that great actually that's why I want to swap them as soon as I buy the boat, if I even buy it, shall see what kind of speed I can get with better 350s w/ new props.
Since I don't know where it comes from I will check for the hook in the bottom aswell thank you very much for all the answers.

Edit: We were running at 5800 rpm not 5500.
