Most of my boats were racked. The PP was towed and I'll never do it again...back to the rack for the next boat.

We call Cumberland our home lake, but we live in Dayton, OH. When we've got a day to work with, we go to one of two little overgrown ponds that are each about an hour from the house. When we are going to make a weekend of it, or a week, we go the Cumberland. We keep the boat in my shop, while I've still to the space and no other need for it. We tow the boat wherever we go. Planning on making the slog to LOTO this August.

On a lift behind my house. I still hardly have time take it out lately. I'd hate to see how much it would sit on the trailer if I had to tow it every time I wanted to use it |

In the Midwest we used to tow when we had several small boats (from a 11 Hydrostream tunnel to a 22 DONZI ZX) There were several lakes we could get to, from door to door and in the water they were from 45 min's to 1.5 Hours if the ramps were not busy. This was when the wife could back the boat off and come back to the ramp when I got there.
When we moved up there was only 1 lake, 1.5 hours away and she could not drive the boat or the truck. PITA for me. We rented a slip and put it on a lift, I could not believe how much nicer that was. Drive any vehicle or motorcycle down to the lake, lower the boat and go. It was a covered slip with a patio, we had it set up with ice maker, refrigerator, electric grill lights etc, and slept on the boat. Spoiled us. Now in Florida. its on a lift behind me, so nice. While I am flushing and washing the wife is putting stuff away and then we jump in the solar heated pool. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c1adcf397.jpeg |
In winter our MTI lived in Haulover Marine Center on the trailer and MTI Support lifted it in and out and did the entire concierge program. It was f.n expensive, but worth it. We went almost every weekend all winter.
The DCB got to LOTO last week. It will live the whole summer at PBC on the trailer. They put it in when we land in STL and we take it to the condo or Camden for our stay. They pull is out and wash it right after we drop it off before we fly home. They do an exceptional job for a reasonable price. It makes it worth the trip 2x a month through September. Next winter it will ne at the new F3 marina in the PBC program here in Ft Lauderdale. |
First year of ownership I had it at a rack. No doubt, the easiest way to get into the boat and that rack year was the most hours on the boat in a season.
However, it was painful not being able to properly take care of it after a day on the water, like a full wash down. Also, the rack bunks did a number on the bottom from point loading the steps. Got a Myco for it year two and have been towing since 2007. Once you get into a routine and have the right gear for towing it's easy. Plus my wife helps every step of the way which is awesome. Tough to do it as a solo act. Ultimate dream is to have it on a lift in the backyard when we retire. |
My lakehouse is on a flood control lake, so there is no private docks allowed. There is a marina about 5 minutes from the house that I have a slip rented for weekends, but I have always trailered. As mentioned above, it makes maintenance, washing, and all that stuff easier (to me), I can choose which boat I want to take, I can go to several area lakes when I want, and I don't have to spend 'weekend boating' time doing maintenance I could have done during the week after work. I have several friends that just push a button and go boating, and I am Jealous, but trailering has just become part of my boating routine.

We had a great plan for three years when we still lived in the Metro Detroit area. Our boat was permanently stored on a single ground level rack outside next to the storage building. This allowed us to work on the boat whenever we wanted, we had water taps and electrical outlets close to the boat. It was easier for the forklift operator to maneuver with the boat since they didn't have the indoor restrictions and they could put us in or take out in a few minutes.

Tow, but rent a slip for summer trips.
