Thats my buddy Tracy in his 58 Hatteras he had docked on the backside of Fort Myers beach.

The dock broke up and he kept control of it for five hours and headed about four miles south until he lost an engine.

He said he parked it in the mangroves to hold it to keep it from drifting into some barges that were anchored up there.

I applaud his efforts! That had to be insane to move it 4 miles in a storm!

Question though, why didn't he flee to the Tampa area or further north to avoid the storm completely?

I think A lot of people were scared to move because they really didn’t know where it was going to hit.

1. Sunday the Fort Myers ABC weather forecasters said the storm will be heading to the panhandle most likely.
2. Monday the forecast had transitioned to potential landfall affecting the Tampa area severely.
3. Tuesday morning at 11:11 AM I received an evacuation notice via text to my phone and I live in Charlotte County, 40 miles north of Fort Myers.

I have no idea why the man in prior post picture of the Hatteras did not move his cruiser to another location, but many of us stayed put because the concern at route 75 would be too backed up to travel, and lack of certainty which way the storm may track. And maybe he felt that the storm was tracking north of the Fort Myers area and the Tampa would’ve been a poor choice based on the Fort Myers major TV stations weather forecasting.

That may shed light on why my some people remained in place (like me), and why he did not take his boat north, my reply should be to Jupiter Sunsation's post #247.

And Fitchpowerboat is spot on accurate in his post, why some people, who had the ability to evacuate, did not.

I was out of town when the wife mentioned evacuation. By Monday morning, she already made the decision and was packing.
