I thought the 600hp V-12 would mean larger boats could run outboards without having to put so many of them on the back…………I guess I was wrong. 🫤
This pic may shock some, it’s a Magnum. Only 3 engines, but a Magnum with outboards……Mmm? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6ff53ae13.jpeg RR (pic borrowed from social media) |

The Intrepid will do everything better than that antiquated Magnum ever thought of doing. No offense to the nostalgia crowd here…

Those old Magnums are classic offshore wavecrushers that a lot of people hold in high esteem. This new Intrepid is the beneficiary of decades of advancements in hull design, layup and construction. It will absolutely outdo the Magnum in just about every important measure, but the old Mag just might be comparable comfort-wise in a heavy head sea. I too wonder if any of the iconic Italian builders like Otam, Pershing or Riva will ever break with tradition and embrace the outboard trend. Riva for example builds beautiful open boats/yachts, but they're staunchly traditional and their inboard shaft running gear makes them less than ideal for use where shallow draft is a desirable asset. They won't even give surface drives a try, but I could see it happening with Otam or Pershing.

What is it? Any word on how it runs?

call me old school but I much rather have diesels hooked up to arnesons for power than 8 ugly OB’s hanging off the back of the boat. If you were to perform a MTBF reliability calculation on both packages…my guess is that the diesels with straight shafts would win.

I don't know Justin the manufactures are moving to what the buyers want. A lot less maintenance and way cheaper to run. Big diesels are connected to tranny's or pods etc. So much more to break and it easy to remove an outboard try taking a diesel out of a boat many times the whole floor has to come out. Diesels are going the way of the dinosaur and big Mercury power. I was 100% against outboards and center consoles and now I see the draw, easy fun boating that is cheaper and way easier.
