How thick do you think the transom is? Also how much fuel do you need to carry. As for looks well,,,,,

With fly by wire controls what maneuver would this be with the engines turned out on both sides ? |

agreed…reliability is proportional to the number of parts/engines. Maintenance on 6 engines is a nightmare. Hell maintenance on 2 engines blows. I can’t imagine doing spark plugs, water impellers, oil changes, etc. no thanks.
Oh no! Outboards are maintenance free. :bong: Every one of these threads that's the argument against inboard engines. Total BS. I get it they may be easier to access. So instead of 2 diesels and whatever drive setup they have that need oil changes and other maintenance now you've got at least 4 up to 6 oil changes, supercharger belts if 400's or 450's (I know the 600's are N/A), lower unit oil, impellers. No damn way they are less maintenance! |

they definitely aren’t any more fuel efficient when they get big. We sea trialed a 53 hcb, and a friend had a 42, less than .5 mpg at a fast cruise. I’m hoping the 600’s are more reliable for these guys. New 43 fountain cc here at the marina this summer, guy got use it 3 times. First day a starter let go, no biggie can happen on any engine. 3rd time out blew a lower. With current merc back orders done for the season. None available. A customer bought a new 2021 boat last august, trim pump failed in may, still can’t get one this week. Never used the boat this year.

Our stepped bottom 477 Intrepid with 4 425 Yamahas would get about .5 mpg at a 45mph cruise and our 80,000lb Pershing with two 1625hp MTU’s and surface drives would get about .35mpg at 45mph cruise. With that being said I would be willing to bet two 1500hp Man with surfaces drives in a 60ft stepped bottom intrepid would get over .5mpg. I’m going to bet the 4 600 Mercs won’t be able to match that.
When we ran some big OB powered boats after owning the Pershing we actually commented a bunch of times how much bigger/heavier the Pershing was and at equal speeds wasn’t burning much more fuel… Another thing when boats start getting to 60ft is your marina choices really narrow down and you get into the mind set of throwing anchor and pulling the tender out of the trunk. Unless they get creative with a trunk out of the side of the boat or something, there’s no way to put a tender into one of these big OB boats. |
These giant CC boats are basically outboard open pilot house yachts. This is the point when twin big hp diesels and Arnesons make way more sense. A new pair of 1800hp Cat diesels costs about $300K and another $200K gets you the Arneson drives and all the rigging (That's $100K cheaper). Then there's the maintenance and ownership costs. How can 6 outboards (72 spark plugs, 12 propellers, 6 ECUS and 6 of everything else) be easier and cheaper to own than 2 diesel engines & drives? Not to mention better weight distribution, same warranty lengths, and less fuel burn in the diesels!
