A service dept manager at a Platinum Mercury dealer told me 15 years ago that a quad Verado Midnight Express was killing him with problems, he joked and said look at the trouble you have had with twins, why would you want 4 motors! So while 4 will take you to the marina and they can be swapped in an afternoon how pissed are you if they can't find a lower in stock and you are entitled to the part for free but its on backorder (now X 4 or 5 motors). You almost should order your multi engine boat, then order another motor just as a spare!
you can watch any of the YouTube videos and just hear them screaming every time they come in an inlet. midnight express seems especially guilty of this.
This would be one large benefit to the 600. you could run two or three mounted close to the centerline and keep the lowers in the water.

this is a common site in boat yards now. If you try mounting the lower units aligned with the bottom of the boat instead of straight across those outer motors will just be out of the water all the time when you’re going fast. Not to mention, turning is now a big problem.
The biggest 600 props will let you get into the low 80s.
