I don't honestly know the answer to that question. Howard's 46 w/ the single 4,600 shp Russian-built turbine had a combination 8/10 drive. I believe the transom assembly/socket housing was from a #10 and the tailshaft housing/propshaft was from a #8, because I think the #10 runs a larger diameter propshaft - making high-performance cleaver propellers impossible to find. Definitely don't take anything I'm saying about the #8 and #10 ASDs for fact, as I never learned much about them - both Rik and Howard didn't talk that much about his setup, as they tried to keep it under wraps as much as possible. This is the first time I've even posted this picture (now that Howard has not been with us for over 2 years, and his 46 has long been sold), as I was always sworn to secrecy with everything I saw hanging off the back of the 46. Trust me, you wouldn't believe the things Howard built and tested on that 46! He was a true innovator. They also always kept it quiet that Howard ran over 200 mph with the 46 - he told Rik he didn't mean too, the boat just did it (it was verified in the GPS). Howard was a very special man, and will always be dear to me.

Any insurance policy written on a turbine boat only covers the boat/occupants when the turbines are not running. The second the fire is lit in the hot section, there is no longer coverage. Undoubtedly the Merc 1350/1550 package helped put the nail in the coffin also, as the big cats can now have very respectable performance (170+) with insurable, warrantied power.

You might want talk to Mike Fusco with his Jet Sets to get his skinny on Turbines. I believe he still has 2!

I'm still friends with Pat Phillips, he could teach me anything I want to know - he rigged all of Howard's turbine boats, and Al Copeland's. I have no interest in learning more than I already know about them as they're way out of my price league.

I still have the 36 I picked up two years ago, but I sold the 46 (Freedom) at the end of last year. I'm really happy with the Stage III 700s/#6 package for the combination of reliability/manners/performance. It's about 15 mph slower than my 30 was with the Sterling 800s/ASD 7s, but such a better ride over the bumps. With the lower rpm of the 700s, it cruises at the same 100-110 mph my 30 did - and does it a lot safer. I don't have to push my luck running north of 150 any more.
