Cruise speed is the biggest advantage of a diesel vs OB. An OB that runs 60 cruises at 40. A diesel/arneson setup that runs 50 will cruise at 40.
I would imagine two 1550 Mans and arneson would be as fast as the (5) 600’s top end, would cruise at 50 and you would be burning about 90gph between the two.

Many small yacht owners are tired of the maintenance and headaches involved with 1500+hp diesels.
Labor $180+ p/hour, month long waiting list, very limited options if you don’t like the dealer closest to you.
1000 hour or 2 year service = $20,000 each engine, need a new aftercooler? That’s another 10k.
not my favorite styling, but I can see the appeal.
The owner of the 78 princess I captain is considering one.

Twice the fuel burn! On the ease of working on them (Not that any owners do) how easy is it to do anything other then a oil change on the center motors?
A good direct comparison between a quad OB powered boat and the same hull with triple inboard IPS propulsion can be seen with MJM's beautiful 53Z. With triple 480 hp IPS 650's, she burns 48 GPH at a 36 knot cruise, tops out at 40 knots and has a 46" draft. With quad 400 outboards, she burns 129.8 GPH at a 36.8 knot cruise, tops out at 44 knots and draws 36.5" engines down and 27" with them tilted up. So the outboard goes a bit faster but burns a lot more fuel. The big advantage I see is the huge under deck storage and machinery spaces and that the much shallower draft of the outboard allows you to do this:

That said, how much cheaper is Mama Mercury going to be with the service and parts for 5x 600 Hp O/B's? I see the major service trail no different that the QC4V engines - you want anything, you pay Mercury... including overhaul which are more than $20K. Anyone know what a complete lower on the 600 retails for?
One plus is Merc power is that the network can get you the parts if they have them faster than most brands globally.
The cost/hr and month long service line-ups are just a fact of boating for most as there are more leaving the industry than going into.

Solid/ Fair points of argument but a 1500hp diesel is a specialized piece with limited market (= everything is a premium $$$).

Pretty sure the wait time to get the QC4V motors rebuilt is many months. But that really isn't the same. We will see on the new V-12's and V-10's. Any idea on availability of those?
