Best for rough seas?

What build are best for rough seas? I keep hearing about cigarettes, mid nights and apaches. What are your top builds for rough seas? Mono hulls only. No cats

Apache

speicher lane 04-13-2023 08:41 AM

6 min 30+ separates Apache from the others in the rough - Epic footage.....( I think Apache can take sea's that the human body can't, at least for long!).

Modern stepped hulls run a lot faster on less power but with big power the Apaches run hard & fast

Wasn't someone on here parting out a 47 Fountain recently?

kadukes 04-13-2023 09:23 AM

The best thing for rough seas is a your a$$ planted on a bar stool:kiss: Save your body and your boat.

First off - big sea running is for endurance racing, wackos and those that have never been out in big seas for extended periods of time. That said, if you want a boat that can run comfortably in true 3-4s and handle the big stuff when needed, here is my humble opinion.

Apaches and 42+' Cigarettes are true wave crushers but heavy and require a lot of HP to run over 90mph.

I own a 38 Donzi ZRC (purpose built sit down / no cabin) and have no doubt that it is the best overall V bottom ever built. Comparing it to all others in the 36-45'+ range, nothing compares to it. The boat runs a legit 110 with 700hp reliable motors, flies level and true, and is all fiberglass so it rides smooth. Yes Outerlimits, will be faster and can handle rough seas, but the ride quality can't be beat in my ZRC.

I have a 42 outerlimits legacy. Its awesome in the big stuff and super stable.

For a rule of thumb, there are some things in general that make a boat good in rough water.
Longer length
Heavier weight
Narrower beam
More deadrise
More stringers and bulkheads

BBYSTWY 04-13-2023 11:43 AM

The Whaler in the video did just fine....get one of those hahahaha

Bostonirish 04-13-2023 12:12 PM

I would absolutely put a 42 outerlimits in This conversation

Wildman_grafix 04-13-2023 12:40 PM

Just about any full displacement hull over 50 feet will be a nice comfy ride,,,, slow but what the heck.

I found most don't like to run in rough, everyone talks about how good their boat is but get over steady 3's and no one likes to. (always big holes in there).

Its never fun for the crew.

Interceptor 04-13-2023 03:41 PM

Are we talking Lake Mead or Lotto rough ?

One quick look back and you'll see if they're having fun, 95% of the time they're not. If I wanted to run in the slop I went out alone or with a hard-core buddy that loved it.

I heard Mead was like going to the train station.

Sorry, I’ve been binge watching Yellowstone the last several nights.

TexomaPowerboater 04-14-2023 01:05 PM

They all break in rough sea's, even Apache's. Any race built boat with extra bulkheads will hold up better than a pleasure version.

kadukes 04-30-2023 05:03 AM

Like 5 ft seas

And which boat build you would say possess alot of all of these features?

seafordguy 04-30-2023 06:04 AM

I'm like you guys - if it's rough, I'm staying home. If I get caught in some bigger seas, I'll survive, but don't want to be there.

I have a 42 and it gets very small in the Bay very fast.

jeff32 04-30-2023 06:53 AM

Some cargo ship end up sinking so...
no matter what size, you might find the sea too rough for any size boat!

I'm staying in, call me what you want but real 5s were never fun for me, in that 47 Apache it would be but for boats in the 30s I just turned around. Your passengers will not have fun unless they're hard core... Even then how much off that could they take?

thisistank 04-30-2023 08:56 AM

Give me an nice sunny day, light wind chop to loosen the water up and a 1-2’ swell to launch off every so often and im
in heaven. Big water gets old, quick. Young man’s game.

Surfers have a better understanding of wave height.

Go get ya some. And you don’t have to be racing to tear $hit up. Years ago we broke both outboard mounting brackets on a brand new 246 World Cat running hard on the way home from fishing in the Gulf. Didn’t lose the outboards but came close.
