Always call and speak to the person. You can get a much better feel about someone before you go sending $$$

I’ve had several very pleasant exchanges with buyers/sellers over the last couple years that entailed nothing but texts. But you’re probably not wrong. That said, I’m doubting these people would answer if you were to call them, for the very reason you’re citing.

I hear your pain. I couldn't get comfortable just sending a check for two takeout motors until my friend looked at all the back and forth texts and said no way that is a scammer send him the check, so I did and fortunately worked out.

Scum bags, get a friggin job.
