bingo . . . makes a HUGE difference on your ability to recover, not necessarily blowing an engine but more so when a cat is pushed to the edge of its control.

this is one of my huge peaves. . . never (NEVER) be in a canopy boat and not belted in. And i know this will be unpopular but i also believe you should have some sort of head protection on (ask me how i know) especially if you will be pushing it. Even if its just some kind of light duty bike helmet or something, anything. When a boat starts false keeling and gets out of control your extremities (this includes your head) can hyper-extend those few inches to the canopy pretty fast and you will have no time or ability to react . . . (again . . . ask me how i know)
Ive also blown an engine in both a Supercat as well as a Superstock cat full throttle in turns and both times the boat just walked out of the turn a bit and we slowed outside the course (oddly both times were at the OPA nationals in Cambridge MD . . . in the same turn lol) |
Thanks for all the input. I was just assuming that when the engine died in gear, the prop would act like a big ol' brake on one side and drag the bow around.

It looks like it is the 40' that is (still) listed here in the classifieds

Glad to hear everyone was ok, that's all that matters.............

My guess is they were already turning when the engine lost power. I also heard that when the spin started, Darr came out of his seat and landed on A Jr and pinned the throttle on the other engine. Makes sense, but this is just stuff I heard or read and not confirmed.

A few years back I had a 300X outboard lock up while going about 80 in a 28 Skater. It pulled a bit in that direction but not bad. We chopped the throttle on the running engine in a controlled way and never came close to losing control. The worst part about it was the 5mph ride for 15 miles and the cost of a rebuilt Sportmaster.

Yeah, I dummingly went out on. a 30 spectre cat w/outboards knowing one engine would cut out. I was nervous but went for it, lost a motor at 110 and it just slowly veered to the one side.. no biggie but it was pretty calm with no boat traffic so totally different scenario

I'm curious Mr Darr. Why did you create yet another of more than a dozen screen names which had you thrown off of every boating site that matters? After a "terrible" accident? Are you that desperate to be the center of attention? You have offered no information of value that could help fellow boaters who may end up in a similar situation as yourself. Just stupid comments and insults, like a petulant child.
Wasn't there a thread on here on all his dumb screen names? I searched but couldn't find it. |

is nothing to add. If you lose power you just don't know how the boat will react. There was nothing anyone could of done to stop this. A canopy boat can save your life is a mishap. Ive been boaing for 50 years and nothing even close to this has ever happenned. If it would of happenned at 150mph in shootout easily could be loss of life

I searched the general discussion, didn't think to hit the Beware section. 87 pages of DarrBS! :D |
I thought each attempt/screen name was banned.... What's changed?

Hopefully the other involved person heals up quickly. First off you need to find some kind of life I guess I’m the Anthony guy your speaking of so here I am just heard people were talking on OSO still and about me As I haven’t been on here in like what 5-6 years I didn’t know My son and are a little to busy working on several Race boats and some of the nicest pleasure boats in the country to be here wasting time Dont you worry about HP Mafia ,my son or me we’ll be fine without your concern |
I can’t believe people still come to this site and post up some of this nonsense
it was Not my Skater it was a MTI For the few with actual concern thanks we’re all fine boat was hardly hurt as this was a slow speed deal just another day … maybe I’ll come back to this page in another 5-6 years to see if it’s still functioning |

Wasn’t mine but dang it’s a good looking boat 😁 https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...111b3b1ed.jpeg |
I have been in several boats that lost engines at top speed, drives lock up like a brake, props break off, driveshafts turn into pretzels, ect. And anyone that says they spun out because of that is lying. Even in a hard turn it will do nothing besides make you slow down.
And someone saying it turned the steering wheel out of their hand would make no sense whatsoever. That is someone that is trying to make excuses because it mechanically cannot happen. edit: I guess I need to add that I was talking about high speed. At low speed it is possible for an engine shutting down to turn a boat. When you dock a cat you can turn the boat easily with one engine. I guess at some point of low speed operations you could be going slow enough for one engine to turn the boat and just fast enough with enough other problems, wakes, setup, ect. to be able to flip a boat over. I have seen a v bottom roll over that was only going 30 mph but was just the perfect circumstance of wakes meeting while they were turning hard because they were not going fast and it rolled. But at high speed a cat will not turn hard from stopping one propeller. A v bottom at high speed could technically become unstable from engine torquing if it was up balancing on the limit and one engine shut off, but it would not turn because of prop drag but because of centrifugal forces from the engine. |

I know what happened: Jimmy Darr was showing off the lake to a lady friend. He was pointing through the polycarbonic windshield made by him and a team of Nasa engineers so he was rounding the point where SuperCat Cove was going to be built and was explaining how his Nor-tech dealership was going to be anchored when suddenly one of his custom built high performance motors that runs on fairy dust suddenly redlined and when he heard the boom he flashed back to the Supercat Cove boat launching location thinking he would get the boat out with the 40 ton travel lift. Boat goes over, Jimmy gets splashed in his face and suddenly realizes its his chance to be "Sunkin" famous on OSO again with his rollever story. He was drying off on the deck of the overturned cat wonder what screen name he would use..............Buddy OO was reborn! :D |

Jim Darr
Wow - this thread brought a lot of oldtimers out of the woodworks.
Evidently, OSO needed Jim Darr like the WWF needed the Iron Sheik. |
