MTI over at LOTO
Friends back in LOTO sent me this pic and said a canopied MTI went over at LOTO today. I was told it was only the driver in the boat at the time and thankfully he was uninjured and escaped through the tunnel floor hatch. Boats can be repaired, people not so much, glad this incident wasn't worse. Everyone stay safe out there!

Is this HP Mafia? I heard they went over but that’s all I heard. Hopefully everyone is OK.

Now I'm hearing there are two in the hospital as a result of this accident. The boat was confirmed as the HP Mafia MTI, and I'm really bummed to now hear there might be two injured occupants. I hope the best for all involved.
|
Dale- I thought HP Mafia was a 388 Skater?
|
Sounds like it happened on the big corner by PB2. 2 occupants were taken to the hospital, one was uninjured. Boat has been loaded on the trailer.
|
I heard it’s the Supercat cove sponsored mti
|
The boat didn't look bad when they pulled it out and I just heard great news that both occupants are fine.

Whether it is a MTI, the result of post Key West repairs, or a something home-built is beyond my interest in MTIs. Good that the accident wasn’t more serious. |
There are 2 different boats.
|
Some googling shows lots of photos of the 388 while this one has seemingly flown under the radar screen.
I guess it is difficult to get chicks with an MTI so you try to be discreet. :D (hoping that this doesn’t take a turn that makes jokes inappropriate) |
Here is the Water Patrol Incident Report. Darr was the driver,

Darr? Is that another alias? :p

It’s by PB2 so I’d imagine that tight corner got him. That’s pure speculation but that corner has gotten a few over the years. Can get rough with cruiser traffic…gotta respect it.
One post said 2 with minor injuries and another said 2 in hospital Looks like Jim came thru belly hatch and was standing on it in the picture. Hope everyone is ok. |
One engine lost all power and the boat spun and flipped. Nobody was hurt.

a cat roll if it loses an engine at speed?” |
Tank, I would think any twin that loses power at speed would get pretty squirrely if the drive suddenly threw the prop into stop position? Anyone ever had that happen?
|
Me, port drive broke the upper locked the engine up at 70 mph boat stayed straight and true came off plane, then a 4 mile idle back to PBC......:faint2:
|
The further away from the center line that the point of thrust is applied the worse the yaw will be when the thrust is lost.

Darr always talked about this Anthony guy like he was Don Aronow. I find it hilarious that they were in that old POS Skater and one guy was on the throttles and the other driving.........
Hopefully the other involved person heals up quickly. |

well, I guess that settles the long standing debate of “will

I know there is a history here, but sure hate to see someone who worked hard to get their boat ready go through that.
|
Ive been in cats at 100+ and lost drives. Theyve always gone straight. Every situation and scenario is different. Keep that in mind.

I have owned a lot of cats including a 39 MTI canopy boat. I have lost props, locked up drives and locked up engines with ZERO issues other than you slow down. I lost a Number 6 drive in the MTI at 150 mph and simply slowed down.

My guess is they were already turning when the engine lost power. I also heard that when the spin started, Darr came out of his seat and landed on A Jr and pinned the throttle on the other engine. Makes sense, but this is just stuff I heard or read and not confirmed.
this is one of my huge peaves. . . never (NEVER) be in a canopy boat and not belted in. And i know this will be unpopular but i also believe you should have some sort of head protection on (ask me how i know) especially if you will be pushing it. Even if its just some kind of light duty bike helmet or something, anything. When a boat starts false keeling and gets out of control your extremities (this includes your head) can hyper-extend those few inches to the canopy pretty fast and you will have no time or ability to react . . . (again . . . ask me how i know) Ive also blown an engine in both a Supercat as well as a Superstock cat full throttle in turns and both times the boat just walked out of the turn a bit and we slowed outside the course (oddly both times were at the OPA nationals in Cambridge MD . . . in the same turn lol) |

bingo . . . makes a HUGE difference on your ability to recover, not necessarily blowing an engine but more so when a cat is pushed to the edge of its control. |

36 Spectre in Same result. Every situation is different. A blanket "cats flip if one engine dies" statement is ridiculous. |
