I would guess it spun on the step.

A friend spun out his boat, he reported steering failure. I wonder if that what it feels like to the captain.

Fractured 5 vertebrae losing a power steering belt once. The engines drove hard starboard in a split second and threw me against the other side of the boat. Crazy.

Cigarette 28ss 330hp 454's. Lost the belt at like 40mph coming into the river. Just cruising, no alcohol involved, actually headed to dinner. Starboard engine was not running when I got up. Bounced twice off the side. It went from straight ahead to full starboard in a blink of an eye. No it didnt have full hydraulic steering, just the standard merc on the inner transom, with a tie bar on the drives. Nothing was broken, just the belt off. Idled home on one engine.

on the standard mercury power steering system, if the pump shuts down, you still have the ability to steer the boat. Now if it was a joystick boat, that is a different story.

Standard merc system. Ripped out of my hand. Maybe it was an old system out of adjustment or something…. I know what happened.

New systems go into limp mode. Have a bud with nothing but problems on his cen console.
