The 8.1 is a modern engine, it really is beautiful and great to work on if you're ok with the modern electronics. The 454 definitely has more aftermarket parts available, but the engines and parts are dated. Just the gaskets and one piece seals are a work of art compared to the old stuff. If you want a carb, go 454, if you want full modern electronic engine control and a bilge with no oil in it, go 496! 🤣
