the Skyway bridge does have HUGE buffer piers on both sides of the uprights. they were put in with the rebuilding of it after it was hit. my question is after the trillions of dollars in infrastructure spending why do all the major bridges not have the same things.

I have wondered the same thing since then. They learned and only applied the new concept to one freaking bridge

The reports on US infrastructure is amazing bad, just think of how many places are wanting that money. I forget how much money and time we really need.

I took this photo from our marina yesterday. We are 2-3 miles south of the Key Bridge ….the view will never be the same. RIP to all those that perished in this tragedy

There are four large cement "bumpers" at the Key Bridge. One on each side of the major support upright structure. If you watch the slo mo video, it actually went passed the bumper and then made a hard right turn to hit the structure.

anyone remember when US Navy Patrol boats strayed into Iranian waters and were taken prisoners for crossing into their waters. The crew members believed the GPS still had them in international waters but the GPS signal had been intercepted from land. Its called "spoofing", I don't think this should be rulled out. Did a hostile foreign country find the ability to hit the "re-set" button on this ship. Effectively knowing how to get this ship dark for enough time to take it off course ???
