Default A lil'l uneasy!

Been following this thread and I have to say I have found it very disappointing.

I know that there is a wide variety of economic backgrounds on this board - some people have dropped a half mil on a boat without thinking about it, others on this board really have to convince themselves to finance 50k on a boat for the next 10 years. Either way - we all like the big toys.

However much money you have to drop on a boat, however rich someone is - the sales people need to be very clear and understanding of the idea that when you are looking into a boat, it is some very serious stuff. I know the offshore boat I will be in the market for late next summer will likely cost more than my house... and I'm sorry, but that is a really big deal to me. Am I going to kick a lot of tires? You damn right I am... and if the salesfolk cant 1) Understand this, 2) Realize it is the right thing to do, and 3) Go the "extra mile" to sell me their boat - then I quite honestly dont want to do business with them.

No, I am not a rich man - but we are still talking about 100 grand of boat, and 100 grand in cash that you are going to be getting from me, and any way you slice it - it will add up to a pretty sexy commission. Yes, I realize it puts food on the salesmans' (womans') table - but it also takes food off of mine, and THAT is the exact level of respect and understanding I want from the person who is going to sell me a boat. I put extra mile in quotes up above - because while I say it to make a point - I honestly don't think that going the extra mile should feel like a bonus or that the sales rep is doing something special for me. That is the JOB of the sales rep... understand, work with the client, take care of the client. I think that is in the job description... it isn't a bonus.

Years ago I sold Kawasaki motorcycles - mostly sportbikes. Yeah, we are talking 6 to 10 grand in bike, not 100 grand in boat - but the deal is still the same. When you are asking someone to part with a lot of money - you damn sure don't get bent out of shape if they want to kick some tires... even if it is half the market. Don't put a timeline on them either... when they are ready to buy, they will. Yeah, you get your number of bull****ters, but you can usually spot them a mile away - especially in a field where you are dealing with a hundred grand plus of boat.

This is a major investment for Dreamer - obviously - as he has indicated in the past what his price cap is. That means you let him kick all the tires he wants - and you even help him. That does not mean you berate him for taking his sweet ass time in finding the right boat at the right price from the right dealer or person that UNDERSTANDS and RESPECTS his situation.

I admire the work that has been done on Tres web site. Good stuff - however - all the sexy coding in the world probably wont convince me to contact you when I am looking to buy a boat. The first rule in customer service is not to piss them off. Notice I didn't say "The customer is always right" - because more often than not - they are wrong. But - it is your job as the sales rep to KINDLY show them what is wrong and help them find what is right. The second rule in customer service is - if you ARE going to piss off the customer - DON'T do it in public! Unfortunately - that didn't happen here, and it is likely going to cost you some potential business. I can already tell you that I won't be putting out a hundred grand with your company for my boat. Sorry - but that's the potential risk of employees cutting loose in a public fora. I want to be treated with respect when I go to find my boat, and I damn sure don't want to be made to feel that it is my JOB to give up my hard earned money. It should be an enjoyable experience - not e berating one and certainly not one that should leave me with an unpleasant feeling in my stomach and the need to search elsewhere for what it is I want.

While I am keeping my eyes open now, I expect my *serious* looking will begin about 6 months before I am ready to buy. This means that I am going to kick the tires of a LOT of boats in the midwest... dozens to say the least. When I find the right one, and when I have done all the comparisons and the money figures and everything else - THAT is when I will buy... and it will likely come to a showdown between a handful of boats.

Lastly - only let the ACTUAL sales reps and the top people in a shop deal with the customers. These are folks who have invested their lives into taking care of the customers, understanding them and their needs, and working with them to find the best resolution to their situation and problems. If your line of work is web pages and office work - then perhaps you should just stick to those areas. A knee jerk reaction like the one that was posted in here - regardless HOW ****ty a day you had - is NOT acceptable, and I'm sorry, but it isn't something that can just be apologized for. Leave the customer service to those who undersand what a customer is, how to deal with them, and understands what service is.

I would rather spend more money at a place that understands me, understands what I am about to do in parting with this money, and understands exactly how serious of a decision this is - than to be made to feel like I am causing a problem for the person whos boat(s) I am looking at. If this is how you feel and this is how you react when someone wants to take their sweet ass time in making a decision - the RIGHT decision - then perhaps you are in the wrong line of work. This isnt choosing between the shrimp and the steak...

And knowledge does NOT mean that you should be in boat sales or customer consultation. I could talk all day long about Sea Ray current and past lines - however, I would never enter the line of boat sales. The only boats I will ever sell are my own and my friends... and I likely won't do the best job of it, because it is not my forte. As it isn't my strong suit - I'm certainly not going to do that kind of work. I will stick to network installations and server and network administration.

Take a hint, and seriously think about the things you say and how it will affect the person you say it to, anyone else that overhears it, and the potential impact that it might have on future dealings.

The best marketing tool in the world is Word Of Mouth. You know that. Everyone knows that. How often do you get the chance to make a lasting impression on 5000 people AT ONCE? Just remember - everyone who reads this thread is going to remember it the next time that someone inside or even OUTSIDE this realm talks about buying a boat... and they are going to be that much less likely to mention your resource. That's a LOT of people. And just like any other story - the fish IS only going to get BIGGER over time.

/End rant

I am a little uneasy to answer you post, I feel you might go back and write a three mile paragraph about this subject, but isn't this a little harsh especially whenI realized how wrong I was and did apologized in a very deep honest way...Our website goes as far to expose personnel backround of Tres and even allows you to visit his family life. I am very proud of our website and I invested a lot of time into it, I look at it as an oustsider looking in so that I can view it just the same as everyone else because not everyone is as educated aout performance details. I am not a salesperson, I am just happy to help promote Tres, he is the most knowledged broker you will ever find, to not pick up the phone and have any discussion about cigarette or performance, you will never know!!!!

Looking over your list, the Mystique is probably the best choice given your initial criteria (mininimal maintenance - - - no big engine replacements or repairs in the near future).

All the boats look good (with one exception), but the larger sightly older Cigarrettes, Apache, and Outerlimits are likely near a rebuild at the very least. Although a first hand inspection and thurough survey (and even then you can't be positive) is the only way to be sure.

There a really so few Mystique's out there compared to the other boats that there is just not enough first hand experiance and knowledge for people to comment on them. But with that said, my choice would be the Mystique for looks and reliable performance. That is unless the Gladiator works out.

At this point in the game, I would even ask for Tres Martin's opinion about the Mystique - - - It is tough to beat his level of experiance and knowledge with offshore boats.

Good Luck.
