I believe all Alphas had them. With it dying when shifting into reverse and only one eng, it made for some embarrassing docking operations.
It's been a long time, but I seem to remember having to make a special tool to loosen the nut on the drive end of the shift cable. Think I welded a large nut to a deep socket so the cable end could protrude thru the socket (no extension or ratchet connected).
Update: Found it. It's a 3/8" drive, 9/16" deep-socket with a nut welded on. It's ugly but it works..

Could have got the nut centered better..

Here's the result of being in a hurry and using an old stick welder in the driveway.
