That Thing Got A Hemi in it?
Sweet......
Anyone have the Hemi in a Dodge truck? This week my dealer is getting the first Hemi half tons in. Think I got my wife talked into driving it. If anyone has one I just wanted to know what they thought about it good or bad. My main concern is buying a first year model engine. Help Im a diehard Chevy man and Im about to buy a Dodge! I just cant stand the way the new Chevy's look. The Dodge Quad Cab four door with the short box just looks right. And with 345 horsepower and 375 ft pounds of tourqe I bet its a blast to drive. Ron |
Rumor has it that the Jeep Grand Cherokee will be poping up soon with that engine in it....But they are saying 355HP and mated to a stick!!! They want their "fastest SUV" title back! :D I cant wait to see it if it actually happens!

My Brother has been a die-hard GMC truck man for 20 yrs.... Just took delivery of his new Dodge RAM.... 4 dr., leather, nicest mirrors I've ever seen for towing.... they fold out!... $37K Sticker! but this truck is light yrs ahead of my 2000 RAM 1500.... and I love my Y2K.... Drive it... you'll own it....

It's not a hemi. Just a canted valve 350. Nothing more than retro name.
|
Spend the money on the diesel !
My dad's coworker has one and loves the power but said it's only getting 9 MPG. This is on a truck that only has around 300 miles on it ,but how much better can it get ? |

You're not going to make her drive around in a 3/4 ton truck everyday are you??:D :D Sell the Blazer and get a diesel.
|
LJ, this is going to be her truck! It will be a half ton 4 door.

Cord It's not a hemi. Just a canted valve 350. Nothing more than retro name. So it isn't a 426. Chrysler started with a clean sheet of paper for this one. When they were looking into what combustion chamber shape to use they looked into the old Hemi to see if would work. The cylinder heads are now more of a hemispheric shape than the old style. Still pushrod, but a better design. |
Ahh. Didn't know you could get the Hemi in a 1/2 ton. So your wifes truck will be bigger and have more power than yours. :D
|
I just went to the dealer and checked into buying a deisel duelly Dodge for a new venture I am planning on spending all of my money on. I was VERY impressed with the truck and price. I looked at Ford and Chevy, but as far as Bang for your Buck , Im going with the Dodge.
|
FORGET THE DODGE. YOU WILL BE SORRY FOR BUYING IT. I'D GET A FORD BEFORE BUYING A DODGE. HELL, BETTER YET, GET THE TOYOTA TUNDRA...........................
|
Guys, 3/4 of cars out there today have a hemisperical chamber. True most of them have overhead cams. But they have about as much in common with the original hemi as the new hemi motor. Chrysler is just name dropping and is trying to capitalize on the notoriety of an awsome engine. Heck, the valve angles are different, the port locations and shapes are totally changed, even the rocker arms are coming in from the opposite side. Don't be sucked in by a clever marketing ploy.

Julio,
Pretty sure he wants a real truck, not a Yota.:D Just messin with ya. I was behind you on HW 42 one day when you were pulling the boat and it looked like your truck pulled it pretty well. |
Oh yea?
Well if nuttin else they look cool with the twin spark plugs going thru the valve covers...............LOL
|
Oh boy , It looks like I better sell my truck, Julio say's a Ford or a Toyo is better !!
He must drive an Isuzu ... I mean Duramax. |
Motors
Ford is so scared of their own diesel they put Intertrashiners in their trucks, Dodge bought Fords Cumalongs for their trucks, I guess since GM owns Isuzu their the only people that have faith in their own products.
|
Uncle Julio drives a Toyota.
Hey Julio, what does your boat weigh on the trailer full of fuel? Dry weight on my 27 Fountain is 4900, add 400 lbs for fuel plus all the other crap you need plus the trailer and Im probably around 6200 lbs I guess. What the towing capacity on the Tundra? Ron |
Spectreboy,
Cummins was never owned by Ford |
Check again
I think if you check you'll see that Ford is the major stock holder in Cummins.
|
He drives a Toyota and want's to bash Dodges ?!?!?
Give me a break, Sorry I live in the Motor city... foriegn vehicles aren't very appreciated here. |
Could it be?
This could be almost as good as the Cat V/S V-Bottom arguement
|
ford escorts around 1994 had a hemisperical combustion chamber too......... i fail to see the big deal........ just more marketing:rolleyes:
|
Spectreboy,
Check it out: http://www.cummins.com/na/pages/en/c...4A0004AC33EA57 |
Working were I do, I have towed with all of the above. I hear our customers complants about there tow vehcles as well. With all of the *****ing and bragging I will be happy to put my money down on a new Dodge. I will be using it in an area that has extremely hot weather, Large hills, Lots of rain, and Image is important. It runs well, Tows great, looks impressive, and is reliable. Thats my opinion.

I was so wrong

My god please forgive me I believed all the hype, it now just seems that Ford can't even invest in a motor let alone build one.
And I really don't care, I'm just having some fun, I got my Chevy cause it was the best deal at the time, and I think with todays technology their all really close, theres a post on here somewhere where they tested all 3 brands and Ford did come out on top, and Chevy was a very close second, but the Dodge didn't fare very well. |
Spectreboy,
I was very surprised that the Ford beat the Chevy, I thought that box stock the Chevy was the one to beat. The Chevy/Allison is a great package but just to pricey for me. I knew up front when I bought my Cummins that out of the box it was a slug but IMO the longevity and fuel mileage is better with the straight 6. Plus it isn't stock anymore !!:D I may be wrong but most of the OTR rigs are straight style motors... they must be for a reason. |
Just to add a little fuel to the fire... Pickuptruck.com just finished a comparison between the 3/4 and 1 ton Ford, Chevy, and Dodge pickups. The Ford had the new 6.0 Powerstroke, the Chevy had the 'Max, and the Dodge had the new hi-po Cummins. Multiple tests including pulling a 12,100 lbs trailer up a 15% grade (hmmm, can you say Cig Top Gun.... :) ).
The overall winner? FORD :D :D :D Read all about it.... http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/stor...art3page1.html |
26 scarab,
I've owned both Chevy and Fords in the past. My last truck was a 1997 Z71 that kept hunderd dollaring me to death. After reading the reports from the insurance institute stating that the Tundra was the safest truck on the road, I knew then it would be my next truck. I have several friends that own Chevy's and Fords and I love to mess with them about their trucks. They also give me hell for driving a Toyota. The bashing is all in fun! But I would still buy a Ford over a Dodge. After the Tundra for a normal use of a truck, then it would have to be a Chevy. The new Chevy diesels are one awesome truck. Ron, The Tundra has a towing capacity of 7,000 punds. I'll admit, it is not as big as the Chevy, but it is a good riding truck with scads of power. If I was in the market for a new truck, with the thought of pulling a larger boat in the future, it would have to be a Chevy diesel, first choice, or a Ford F-250 second choice. I think our boats weight about the same.............. |
Catmando,
you've hit the nail right on the head ! Now unfortunatley the Cummins is tuned down so much it gets spanked by all the others. A little tweaking though and she will rock ! Julio , Do you have one of those huge wings and a big fart can muffler hanging off of the back of that ricer ?!?!? ;) :D |
I've got a 2002 Dodge Quad Cab 1/2 ton 4X4 and it pulls my 25 Daytona great!!! I've had it for six months and I couldn't be happier with it. It is by far the best looking of its competitors and is very solid for towing and hauling. Mine has the "Lone Star" package here in Texas which means it came with everything but leather and it has the 20"wheels, which are monsters. They look great though. BTW, i've owned fords and chevys in the past and I like this one better so far.
My .02 Rick |

Originally posted by catmando Having owned a 1987 Ford 6.9 diesel(read DOG:rolleyes: ), what I've read is that the straight 6s make more torque than the V8 diesels. I've heard some talk that the Cummins can pull up to 25,000 lbs with the right setup. So I guess torque is the key to pulling power rather than HP. |
Did Puder buy a Fountain and change his name to fountain1fan?
Ron |
Didnt mean for this thread to become a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and jees Toyota pissing match. All I really asked was if anyone had a truck with the 5.7 Hemi in it. Just wanted some real world feedback on the engine.
We all buy our trucks for different reasons and Im sure the truck everyone has suits their needs. I know that a diesel will tow better than a gas burner however my truck will do much more non towing than towing. In fact my wife wants to drive this one. All I am really concerned with is that it will pull a 27 Fountain reasonably well. My inlaws live on the water in Orange Beach and its a 4 hour tow from my house. It would be a shame to have to use the old truck to tow there. I know this new Hemi is not the old 426 Hemi. I also know that most OHC imports are a Hemi design. I also know that the BBC is a semi-hemi with its canted valves. Im not buying into the hype. I just think that 345 hp and 375 ft lbs will meet my towing needs and be fun to drive around town in a half ton truck. On top of that the truck looks great. The only vehicles I have ever bought new have been Chevy trucks starting with a '90 model and I have been completely satisfied. I eagerly awaited the current body styles arrival and planed to get a new truck untill I saw one. I couldnt stand it, no offense to those who own one. Someone told me that Chevy was comming out with a Hybrid SUV and Pickup that was supposed to look different so I waited untill I saw the Avalanche and was disappointed with the styling again. Now just when I am kind of getting used to the current pickups they go and put the horrible Avalanche front end on them. Ive had it with Chevy. I hated to admit it as a Chevy man but when the current Dodge came out I liked it right away. My only problem with the Dodge was the 360 Mag was a dog compared to the Chevy motors. Now that I can get a more powerful engine in it I think its the truck for me. I still cant belive I trying to buy a Dodge! Ron |

Found this while researching the Hemi online. Kind of cute!
Hemi: (HEM -e) adj. Mopar in type, V8, hot tempered, native to the United States, carnivorous, eats primarily Mustangs, Camaros, and Corvettes. Also enjoys smoking a good import now and then to relax. - David Charles Gedraitis |

RJ... I was a chevy man from day one 30 yrs ago..... I feel your pain.... but the sad truth is.... GM fit & finish just isn't there compared to Dodge, Ford, and my GOD... Toyota!.... They still tow like a Clysdale.... but they just don't have the creature comforts....I look at this way... its there fault... I wanted to go thru life in a Chevy.... But I've been driven Dodge trucks since '98 .... and I've never been sorry.... You'll love truck.... Good Luck!
