So, where exactly is Lake Cumberland???
Looking at maybe making a trip down at some point this coming summer. But I don't even know where it is really. What is the nearest city? Town? Just throwing around some ideas with the little lady.
Mike |
It is close to the Ky-Tenn border....just west of I-75....
worth the trip !! |
From your area it is about 6 hours south on I65. If you decide to go get with me and I will get you exact instructions. Also will get you info you need. I have a manufacturing facility in Jamestown, KY
Get to go there all year round except past 12 weeks broken foot. |
About 550 miles for me. About 80-100 miles shorter than my trips to LOTO.
|
Is it not about 2 hrs o Indy for you, well 4 hrs south is Jamestown marina
|
Waterfoul,
It will be worth your trip. It is my home lake where we keep our boat. It has a "cove" named 76 Falls. Nice waterfall and usually good other "scenery". By NO means equal to "Party Cove" at LOTO but not bad. Let me know if I can help with you plans as the time approaches. Be Safe, Mark |
Nope....Indy is about 4-5 hours towing, depending on traffic. I'm in Grand Rapids, MI. It's nearly 2 hours to the border of Indiana from here towing a boat.
|
Mike,
Let me know when you're thinking of going. Depending on the national race schedule, I may be interested. Sounds like a fun trip. |
Waterfoul,
Using Map Quest from Grand Rapids to Aaron, KY which is on the end of the lake where we are near Grider Hill Dock it is 530 miles with 10 1/2 hours of drive time. They are also routing the long way once you would hit the KY border. I can give you directions that will be considerably closer and faster. It would be the same route that we travel every weekend. Be safe, Mark |
Gordo,
You also will enjoy it. In years past (last year was dead for whatever reason) Sat. evening about 5 -6 PM or so out in front of the dam is the place to be. Once the crowd starts leaving 76 Falls the horsepower ends up at the dam for some impromptu racing of sorts. Can be a good show even if one does not participate. There is some fairly impressive horsepower with several that are in the 100 MPH range. Not to mention some new blood / boats that I know have been purchased at the end of last season. Several OSO members also frequent Cumberland so we can have an OSO get together to some degree. Also we are planning a trip to LOTO at some point next summer. Would like to try one of the 3 holiday weekends but not sure if my old body could survive it. Willing to try though! Have been twice before first time for the US Offshore Races several years back and the last time for the Poker Runs America Poker Run. Looking forward to our next trip. Be Safe, Mark |
I live just south of Indy and it takes me 4 1/2 hours to get to Jamestown. I have made the trip several times and I think the best way is 65 to E'town to 61 or maybe 210 now. Just my .02 and it is worth every minute of the drive.
|
Doug and Betty, owners of a 35' Cigarette called "Pure Adrenaline" do a lot of boating down there at Cumberland. I told them that I'd like to visit Cumberland as I have never been there either. They are going to acompany me down there sometime next season. I want to try and get around to other places as I really enjoy all the new scenery.
I also want to get up to Traverse City and Higgins Lake which is by Traverse City. Lake Havasu and even LOTO sometime and back over to St. Claire Shores. It's good to break up the manotany (spelling?) of the same'ol places when possible. |
boatfreak28,
You are right on with your directions. This is how I was going to route Waterfoul once he gets into KY. Lets make this thing big! Be Safe, Mark |
It is well worth the trip if you havn't been there!

Gordo, I might be up for a Road Trip!! Let's see if we can get the whole group to go!! I've see pictures of the Falls and it looks awsome!! Is there a poker run there??
Someone set up a OSO gathering and I see if I can make it!!! Where would be the best area to stay? |
Brad & Gordo,
We might be up for joining the caravan out of KC. I was planning on buying a trailer this spring to get out some more. Doing it for the poker run weekend would be cool. |
FunHome,
Yes there is a Poker Run here. It is the weekend after Labor Day. Will be Sept. 5th & 6th this year. Put on by midamericanboating.com. Draws people from all over the country. Approx. 200 + boats last Sept. Check their website for pics & info. As far as places to stay there are several to choose from. Tell me what you are looking for & I can point you in the right direction. The lake is not grown up and comercialized like LOTO though. Should not be a problem to set up some sort of OSO get together. Have not ever been to one so I am lost as to what that normally would entail. Be Safe, Mark |
This would be real cool! I have a place on Wolf Creek where I keep my boat I put in and out but there are plenty of places to stay with slip rental, camping, cabins or hotels close by. Jamestown Marina is popular and at the good end of the lake eaiser to get than some of the other marinas. Conely bottom is a nice marina but 30 miles up lake from Jamestown wich is 15 miles from the dam. Renting house boats could be a good option a place to walk around cook and stuff I know some people might want to sleep on their boat tied up along side. You could check out Somerset Ky Jamestown KY Monticello Ky or Burnside KY as the citys around the lake. Marinas would be Burnside, Lee's Ford, Conley Bottom, Jamestown, State Dock, Alligator1 and 2(Indian Hills), Beaver Creek, and Grider Hill.

Hey Foul,
Keep me up to date on your plans! My brother-in-law just moved to KY and bought a brand new huge house. He lives in Northern KY somewhere (He just moved yesterday so I don't know where exactly yet but he owes me one after loading up a huge truck with all his crap to move) He est. about 2 hours from his house to the lake. |
Waterfoul, It took me 12 hous with stops and that is from Detroit and stoping for gas and a Dew to keep me up!!! at Grinder Hill Dock where we all met up??? left at 6.00pm pulled in at 6.00am..it was a great time.

If we didn't like to trailer to new places so much we would leave are boat at Cumberland for sure. Kamma turned us on to Lake Michigan this year so we will probably hang out up there alot this year checking out the differant ports.
What we like about Cumberland so much are the coves. You can go so far back, drop an anchor by yourself or a group and not see anyone all day. The lake and coves are vary deep. You can be 15' off shore and be in 20' of water and cristal clear. We belong to the Tri State Power Boat Asso. in Cincinnati and we did a fun run there in the spring that was alot of fun. We should have a meeting coming up soon so if we put something together I'll let everyone know. |
Gordo, we may be interested in going out with you guys. Ther are several from Ok , Blown Formula, my self, Baja Kid and others that would probably go. Put us on the list.
Thanks |
went this year from mi...
My wife and I trailered down there end of august, I think about 8 hours from here. Stayed at jamestown cabins, very nice for a cabin. 2brs., 2bath ac blah blah. Put the boat in a covered slip for three nights and explored.
What you need to know, great scenery, no shore line or sand or beaches to pull up on. Dry county, bring your own refreshments and be careful. Lots of houseboats and lots of nice hardware. We were able to travel the whole lake in 3 days. Will probably be going back this year. john |
Trailered about 8 hrs from Cortland Ohio last Sept. to hang out at the poker run and it was awesome!!
|
Awesome Time. Can't wait til Spring. Waterfoul let us know when you are planning to go and all of us Land Cumberland OSO'ers can get together.
Hey Mark, good to (GETTIN' BYE) hear from you. I think you post about as much as myself:D See you in the Spring! 76 Falls Lake Cumberland |
You do not have to be too careful about the dry county thing. Just keep it in a cup or a coolie and you are fine. That pic of 76 falls is pretty calm. Usually lined with houseboats and partiers. It is a pretty popular place for people from Cincinnati.
I make the trip 1-3 times a year. It is about 3 1/2- 3 3/4 hours. I make the southern Michigan trip about 6-8 times a year. That alo is about 3 1/2 - 3 3/4 hours. I would say from Grand Haven you are looking at about 9 hours, direct shot. Hope you all can make it down some weekend, it's really a great lake. |
Maybe we could rent one of those giant "Party Barges" and have
a OSO get together in the spring sometime ? Count me in !!!!1 |
Fast Enough,
What is this "land cumberland OSOers"? Are you without a boat? Can't wait untill its spring again and we start boating again. Usually late April even though its still cold. Yea I do alot of lurking however my posting is picking up. Take care and see you soon. Mark |
Beautiful place. Miles and Miles of shoreline and thousands of coves to explore and hang out. Great on a jet ski or boat. Very Deep.
Let's have a get together in the spring! Steve |
Sorry Mark that was just a typo. Yes I still have my new Checkmate. See you in the Spring.:D
|
FAST ENOUGH,
Good to hear that you are not boatless. You had me a little concerned with that one. Its not like the one your in has the new worn off of it yet. Mark |
Hey Fowl, Whats UP??
While this is still in the planning stages, I would like to submit an alternative Desination.. Ky. Lake!!!!! The Drive would be about the Same, for you Northern Guys, and it would be a Whole Lot closer , for the LOTO Group!!!!! It's around 9 to 10 Hrs. from Detroit,,, and 4 hrs from St. Louis.. Now you Lake Cumberland Guys, don't Spaz out on me,, Mama and I love it over there, Weve been doing that Poker run, for a long Time!!!!!! I think Ky. Lake would be a Lot better Suited, for a "GET TOGETHER" We have Bigger Water, Beaches you can pull up on, Resturants and Taverns on the Water, The Rock Quarry, which is our Answer to the Falls, Boats, Babes, Etc,,,,,, Our OSO Group here, is ready, willing, and Able, to Make it a HAPPENING!!!!!! |
Hmmm....so many destinations and invitations, so little summer and $$ :D
|
<laughing @ Foul..>
Just what I was thinking,
So much water, so little money  |
MONEY??? What's that??????:D :D :D :D
|
Well guys if you have not already seen it, the Feburary issue of Powerboat did an article on the 2002 Lake Cumberland Poker Run . It starts on page 64.
As you can see by the pics and text it is a fairly big draw. I am sure that most of you are familiar with several of the boats shown. Just keeps getting bigger and better. Just more incentive to come to Lake Cumberland. The poker run is always the weekend after Labor Day (Sept. 5 & 6th, 2003) Mark |
Before you go make sure you buy all the alchohol you plan on consuming for the whole trip. The county is DRY. You CANNOT buy a beer.
However, You can bring in all you can carry and drink it as long as they cannot tell what it is from the container. Lots of starbucks mugs filled with beer. |
KY Lake
Our group is allways looking a new things to do. We have talked about going to the KY Lake many time. I think a KY Lake OSO meet would be great.
:D |
So, your telling me that I can't even have a Bud Light can in my hand while on my boat????
|
Waterfoul,
That is not what is being said, however you must be "DISCRETE" with the container it is packaged in, and not physically show impairedness. Other than that should be no problem. Discretion is the key. Mark |
