Finger Lakes - Labor Day 2003

Looking at at a trip to the area over Labor Day (and the following week) next summer. I will probably stay at the Ramada in Geneva for the first few days, as it is close to the Cayuga & Seneca canal. This way, we can cover two lakes at once. I'll have the 28' BatBoat, and Shane's thinking about brining his 24' Skater over as well.

Anyone have any advice on these lakes - launch ramps, transient slips, lakefront restaurants, etc? I haven't been there since 1981....

Anyone want to join in or meet up?

jb 12-31-2002 12:43 PM

why the finger lakes If i can ask... I live in Syracuse...I will get you any info you need.

Shane 12-31-2002 12:45 PM

There is an event nearby that weekend that we will be attending and would like to cruise and enjoy the scenery.:)

Tantrum 12-31-2002 12:46 PM

No info on the lakes but it sounds like a interesting trip.
Keep me informed and maybe we'll throw in an Active Thunder.

jb 12-31-2002 12:51 PM

The weekend of September 4-7 will be the Zippo Vintage Grand Prix weekend at the Watkins Glen track, featuring a tribute to the late Mark Donohue. (I was a great fan...) I figured, while we are up there, let's make a week of it!

jb 12-31-2002 12:55 PM

good deal, there is plenty of scenery near watkins to hang on the boat
long lake to stretch the power out. Oneida lake is 45 minutes to an hour away as well. The erie canal is idle speed at best not too much fun, but with the right boat a good time and great site to see.

jb 12-31-2002 12:56 PM

If you need any info let me know I will get you whatever I can. I have friends that go every year by boat I can get some insight for ya if you wish...send me a pm or [email protected]

jb 12-31-2002 12:57 PM

otis311 12-31-2002 01:39 PM

I should close the deal on Thursday. Got the survay done yesterday, and thats the last thing the bank needed to release the funds!! She is going right in to get re-habed before I bring her home. New dash and interior to start. Im working now as i have done every day this past week due to the snowstorm and my shedule at the firehouse

Shane 12-31-2002 01:48 PM

Got any pics? Shoot me some at [email protected]

Tantrum 12-31-2002 01:49 PM

Otis311,
Whats this....you are buying a new tow vehical. Although I hope I wont be requiring your services this year you might want to beef up those rear cleats. Just got a new prop and looking at drives so Ill be already for an early spring run up on the lake.
Lets hear about the new rig. Will it have one of those remote arms that automatically hooks up the tow rope? :p

jb 12-31-2002 02:04 PM

c spray, did you used to own a 31 cig?

C_Spray 01-01-2003 01:29 PM

jb - Nope, just the current 28' Bat and a 38' Formula. I know a guy who used to own a 31' Mystique, though....

wwwTOPDJcom 01-01-2003 11:20 PM

Im on cayuga all the time , Carves cove is full of boats that day
lets have a OSO group outing

[email protected]

RLW 01-02-2003 10:13 AM

DJ, where is Carves Cove on Cayuga Lake? We are always looking for places to go as we live in the Finger Lakes Region.
C-Spray, might have to hook up just to see the 28' Mannerfelt.
Check out Canandaigua Lake, it's just down the road from Geneva, NY. Watch out for Zebra Mussels in any of the lakes. Footwear required.

Id have not been to seneca yet

RLW 01-02-2003 04:28 PM

DJ, great feedback. I have lauched at Cayuga Lake State Park on the westside. Launch is a little short from what I can remember. Might have to make the trek to the eastside. I am launching a 27 footer. Now that I have your ear, what about on water B&B's?

wwwTOPDJcom 01-02-2003 11:41 PM

on water what? I know Ill be up there the weekend

RLW 01-03-2003 07:50 AM

Bed and Breakfast on the water with dockage.

C_Spray 01-03-2003 10:05 PM

Great feedback - Could be an OSO outing!

Sounds like there will be plenty of fun, no matter what. Like I said, we'll base ourselves out of the Ramada in Geneva (N. end of Seneca) from Saturday 8/30 through mid-week. This will give us time to check out the other lakes as well (Including Canadagua!). Later in the week, we'll probably move down to the Glen Motor Inn to be with our friends wo are coming from the races. (Boat will probably still be in the water down there somewhere as well.)

Still have my flats wading shoes to deal with the mussels....

RLW - Just do a web search: "Finger Lakes" - You'll find TONS of stuff on accomodations.

jb 01-04-2003 12:14 AM

dont let this thread die

wwwTOPDJcom 01-04-2003 12:35 AM

well I be at the poker run in 1000 islands aug 22-23 come back 24
then it looks like a sat30,sun31,mon1 on those two lakes seneca and cayuga unless a brake something:D

GO4BROKE 01-04-2003 07:41 AM

It would be nice to make it a CNY OSO gathering. Are there any good launches for a 31' boat, preferably on the North end?

arks 01-04-2003 01:25 PM

C-Spray-
I spent lots of summers up there in my youth! I recommend a day on Keuka Lake (just west of Geneva/Seneca lake). Not too many launch areas, but some fine waterfront restaurants and 3 towns to explore (I like Hammondsport- the "cradle of avaition"; Dianne would like the shops! http://www.hammondsport.com/). The locals here don't see many real performance boats, so the Batboat will be an attention-getter. I have relatives in the area (Wayne); if I'm there around Labor Day, I'll let you know.

RLW 01-04-2003 02:33 PM

Keuka Lake is one of my favorites. Plenty of on water restaurants.
The State Park over in Branchport has a great launch for larger boats. Check out the Village Tavern in Hammondsport. Also, when we boated to Hammondsport late last year, they were putting in new municipal dockage. It has needed that for a long time.
The down side to Keuka Lake is the speed limit of 45 mph. That didn't stop us from chasing down that 27' Fountain and running hard for a few miles. Just have to be sensible and the police will not bother you.

EvilTwin 01-06-2003 09:54 AM

I would be up for some kind of a get together. I have not been on any of those lakes, but if they are deep and safe enough I am game.

JB, I still want to make it to Pirates week in Alex Bay!

SeaDated 01-06-2003 10:02 AM

The finger lakes are some of the best lakes I have seen. One word of caution about Canandaigua Lake, It has a 50 MPH max speed limit and the sheriff loves to check.

arks 01-07-2003 09:07 PM

I didn't know there was a speed limit on Keuka! Guess I've been lucky . Of course, my boat barely goes over 45, so maybe that's got something to do with it :eureka:

wwwTOPDJcom 01-11-2003 12:38 AM

without signs How in the hell do you know this info?

GO4BROKE 01-11-2003 06:07 AM

The finger lakes are plenty deep! The Navy used to test subs in one of them, 700+ feet deep.

GO4BROKE 01-11-2003 06:10 AM

If anyone wanted to work their way up to Lake Ontario (no speed limits) I would happily host a get together at my camp on Port Bay (between Fair Haven and Sodus). Only one dock, but anyone willing to raft is welcome.

wwwTOPDJcom 01-11-2003 12:08 PM

I would definetly like to see some good CNY gatherings
lets see some more input on this.:o

EvilTwin 01-13-2003 09:21 AM

Brian and fellow OSO'ers,

I plan on trying to get a poker run started for this summer on Sacandaga. It is a big lake with plenty of activity and beautiful places to stop. I have already talked to some of the businesses and they are for it. I will give more details as I get them. Would there be any interest from any of you? Any feed back? Thanks

Chris

SeaDated 01-13-2003 10:18 AM

wwwTOPDJcom

The speed limit signs at posted at the launch ramps. As far as I know the only finger lake that has a limit is Canandaigua Lake.
